Despite the Guomindang (GMD) having an army three times the size than that of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1946, by the end of the Chinese Civil War (1946-49), a multitude of factors caused the tables to turn and resulted in the communist takeover of China . This essay will examine factors such as Maoist ideology, practical reforms and the incompetence of the GMD, all of which were all responsible for the CCP victory in 1949. Ultimately, it will be argued that although there are other factors to consider, since they all somehow stem from the ideology, ideology was, to a great extent, responsible for CCP victory in 1949.

Many people were skeptical of living under the instability of GMD rule because nepotism and favouritism were common in the government. Officials often abused the system, employing policies that were used for their own personal gain. This threatened the economic and political situation of China and demanded another alternative, which the CCP happily provided. While the GMD was suffering from economic problems, the CCP ensured stability through their ideology and reforms, as proven by the model of the Yan’an Soviet under CCP rule. Through their reforms, they aimed to reconstruct the civil service, eradicate corruption in the government, and centralize administration. Mao was able to economically, politically and socially transform the rural society of Yan’an into a stable region within an unstable country. Through proving his capabilities as a leader, Mao managed to garner a lot of support for the CCP. The idea of political and economic stability appealed to people and resulted in them recognizing the CCP as a party for the people. Not only did they think the CCP would revitalize economy through collectivization and industrialization, but also, they thought the CCP would rid the government of corruption.
