The hurricane lasted 7 days, in between the dates of the 23rd of august and the 30th of august, 2005. There were an estimated value of 1833 causalities between those dates and wind pressures managed to hit up to 280 km/h, making it a category five hurricane, the highest you can go.
The official city, state and the federal plan was basically a RLH plan, which stood for run like hell and as new Orleans was under sea level they had every possibility of flooding, which was what happened the day after the federal levees failed.
It was really just that simple, they were told to just evacuate, and they didn’t know, where to evacuate? Or how long because they were not given any answers. If you had a car you had a way out, if you has a relative, friend or lots of money then you had somewhere to go, but if you were too old or too poor then you were just simply out of luck. The average age of deaths for the hurricane was 75 years old so that just goes to show the sort of people that were dying were the elderly because they either had no where to go, or they just didn’t have any clue about it.
They reversed the traffic on the motorways going out of new Orleans to facilitate evacuation but it still took 12 plus hours to reach Baton Rouge (which was next to new Orleans and was normally an 1 and 15 minute drive). Hospitals and old peoples homes were left to figure out how to evacuate on their own. Many failed to do so.
During the hurricane everyone gathered in the city baseball stadium if they couldn’t evacuate, there were reporting’s of alleged rapes, murders, and a number of other offences because it just made people go so crazy.
