The 13th amendment, 14th amendment, and 15th amendment were passed African Americans were never free they were still segregated. The "Negroes found themselves systematically separated from whites ("Seeds of Failure in Radical Policy", 304). The 14th amendment said, that African Americans equal rights and the US citizenship, however, they had to sit in the back of the bus while the whites sat at the front. Inclusive they had to give up their seats if a white had no seat. " Negroes.. were often educated in segregated schools, punished in segregated prisons, nursed in separated hospitals, buried in segregated cemeteries" (Document I, 306) African Americans didn't receive the correct treatment they deserved they were treated
unfairly.The Civil war took place due to slavery and preventing African Americans from withdrawing from the United states. After the ending of the Civil War of 1865-1877, Reconstruction took place. The reconstruction began after the North had won its victory against the South. It was a process of readmitting Southern states into the southern union. During this period there was a controversy because of Abraham Lincoln's assassination however, Johnson replaced his position as president. African Americans suffered they lived through being treated with no justice and treated harshly. African Americans were evicted from their homes and had no jobs or money to provide for their families. They couldn't have decent jobs which paid a good salary because they had no education .Reconstruction was a Radical Republican's attempt to try and bring the Confederate states back to normal and unite both the South and the North into a whole country once again.
