One of the most challenging parts about facing difficult times and hard ship is learning how to look past the adverse times to see the brighter side of your troubles and the lighter side of your struggles. United States foreign policy has always been characterized by a commitment to free trade, protection of American interests, and a concern for human rights. Our founding fathers, specifically George Washington, are responsible for much of the influence regarding foreign policy after their time period and up to the present day. Washington, in his Farewell Address, warned the country to stay out of permanent foreign entanglements and to stay neutral. The United States stayed faithful to Washington’s warnings for about 125 years. But, when the age of Imperialism hit, the country was forced to intervene to prevent other countries from rising up and becoming world powers. The atrocities of imperialism caused something that America will always regret; The First World War. After the war, the United States’ foreign policy changed from all out intervention to almost complete isolation, similar to what George Washington suggested. After the Second World War, American foreign policy back once again to intervention to try and make the world a better and more peaceful place. In comparison, each foreign policy have nearly no similarities, but a wealth of differences.…
It’s George Washington’s character, what he valued, and he is unarguably the best president to hold the United States in his best interest. It’s not just what he did for his country, but the reasoning behind it. He is rightfully known as the Cincinnatus of America (Cincinnatus was a Roman general who defeated his enemies and immediately gave up power instead of becoming king) because he put the United States before himself. This is shown in the fact that he could have served for life with great power, but chose not to. He wanted to see the United States develop correctly, and that could not be done with just one man ruling as king. These decisions show the mind set of a true patriot. At the end of his second term though, he revealed one of the most important documents in the United States. George Washington’s Farewell Address was written because he wanted to warn the people of the United States of various outcomes and what he envisioned the future should behold in its most basic form. The purpose for writing his Farewell Address is to remind the United States to moderate political parties, be suspicious of foreign influence, and be wary of false patriotism. He then explains his action by the principles he lays out throughout the address. He closes on the fact he is excited to join his fellow Americans as a private citizen in this newly founded free government that they have created together.…
Washington believed his advice against alliances with other countries was a permanent consideration. He stated that in the future America should be ruled by good trust and righteousness, and not by alliances. America shouldn’t lean on alliances to make the country strong. Also, Washington proclaimed that the United States should treat all countries equally, and not be biased towards another country for any reason. For example, Washington thought that the United States did not owe France anything for allying with America during the American Revolution, so the Americans should not aid France if they were to go to war in the future.…

Although John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address is one of the briefest documents in history, it perfectly describes what he plans to do in his time in being president. This speech goes over the period of the Cold War and other matters going on in the world in the early sixties. This was a period in which most Americans were worried about the planet, goals that need to be achieved to ensure the safety of the people of the U.S. and also the new technological advances that were being made. The United States was torn between racism in the 1960’s and Kennedy had to address that in his time in being the president. The Cold War was also at its peak during that time (Bragdon) and the people of the U.S. knew that Kennedy was a young and inexperienced president and were worried about how he was going to lead the nation in times of crisis.…

George Washington says, “It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world.” This sets the tone for isolationism. Isolationism is “the policy or doctrine of isolating one’s country from the affairs of other nations by declining to enter into alliances, foreign economic commitments, international agreements, etc., seeking to devote the entire efforts of one’s country to its own advancement and remain at peace by avoiding foreign entanglements and responsibilities” (Dictionary.com, n.d.). Abraham Lincoln was more than qualified to be the president during his first inauguration, let alone by the time he was speaking at his second inauguration. In his Second Inaugural Address, Lincoln examines the fact that slavery was going to rip the fact that slavery is not only a sin of the South, but also of the North. (Basler, p.793) He understands the nation to have a progressive aspect built into its very nature, and it must overcome any shortcomings along the way. For a nation to erupt in a civil war over a matter that seems as destructive and corrosive as slavery is, it just pays tribute to the success rate of recovery for the a nation as a whole. Lincoln attributed this sense of retribution to a devotion to God and one owns people in…
