Why do we enjoy watching bloodshed and death? I believe that people are drawn to movies of violence, gore, suspense, and death because we are always creating our own outcomes. Horror movies test us on our fears, desires and mentality. As from the king’s thesis, “the reason we all crave horror movies is because we are all mentally ill”. That gives a point that we need to watch horror movies just to release our tension. Some people prefer horror movies for a different reason. They want to prove to themselves that they are brave and that they fear nothing. People always try to prove certain things true when they are not that sure of themselves. Even though they choose to watch these things, the images are still disturbing for many people. But people have the ability to pay attention as much or as little as they care to in order to control what effect it has on them, emotionally and…

There are plenty of different reasons why people like horror movies. For some people it may not be about just watching people be murdered, it could be more so about the fascination of how they made the scenes look so real. If the people who watch horror movies are said to be mentally ill, does it also mean that the people who create horror movies are too? Imagine what goes into a director's head when they are creating these movies. Creating horror movies to them may seem like art, it is a game of making something so fake look so real. It could be possible that the creators of horror movies only make horror movies to attract as King said “mentally ill” individuals (King 598).…

In Stephen King’s “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” he enlightens the audience on their obsession and captivation with horror movies. King describes fears, illnesses, and nightmares that most people in the audience experience. He compares horror movies to roller coasters and explains that the reader often rides or watches them to prove that they are not afraid. King references the horrific movie Die, Monster, Die! And reminds us that we are still far from “true ugliness.” He identifies the kind of twisted fun that comes from watching horror movies. Horror movies allow us to gain control of our emotions and let our imaginations run wild, King explains. Revenge, according to the online Oxford dictionary, is “the action of hurting or harming someone in return for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands.” To me, this is essentially what Robin Wood means when he talks about “the return of the repressed.” In horror films, the things we try to repress in society, like female sexuality and social outcasts, end up being the things that return seeking revenge on their suppressers. That is why it can be said that the repressed return in horror movies. However, this can also be said about other movies as well and doesn’t only apply to horror movies. Thrillers, actions, even comedies, can have revengeful characters and themes, which is why Wood specifically states that there is a “basic formula for…

Blood, gore, death, darkness, suspense, and fear of the unusual are just a few ingredients that are stirred into making a horror film. Horror films are projected to create a psychological sense of fear; however, humans tend to enjoy and crave the heart-pumping adrenaline rush of terror. Some believe it is the calling of curiosity while others think it is the section of insanity that imbedded itself into our mind. Trepidations are not a trend that has set forth in the twenty first century; we humans hunger after the thrill of terror ever since Roman times. In addition, horror films closely relate to events like gladiators fighting at the Flavian Amphitheatre, not only because of the blood and gore, but for the audience purpose of intentionally…

The typical convention of horror, specifically using the colour white, is shown in the typography. The colour white connotes the image of ghosts, spectral beings that haunt their victims. This connotation gives the audience the feeling of the ghost is gazing at the audience through the DVD cover through the blurry effect and the filter applied to bulge the text giving the text a spectral presence. This is also seen in the film “Entity” with the bold typography and a white figure in the background. The feeling of being watched invokes the audience because of the adrenaline being produced in the body. A plausible reaction would be is to drop the DVD cover and run! This gives the audience a sense of gratification. Horror films offer a diversion from normal life as the supernatural events that happen in them are astounding.
