Professional’s and What Impressions They Get from Television
The four articles listed below all have the common theme of television, though some believe that TV has gone too far, others say that TV has actually made the generation smarter. Shows that some people claim should be off air are talked about their intellectual points, and how society has gone downhill from reality on TV.

In the article written By Steven Johnson, “Watching TV Makes You Smarter”, states that the TV audience has become more cognitively demanding then earlier generations. Johnson believes that shows on TV are popular because they make the audience think more to understand the show. He has come up with an idea called the Sleeping Curve; which is any form of entertainment that an audience has to pay attention, make inferences, and track shifting social relationships. People believe that Family Guy intelligently satirizes some aspects of American culture. Peacocke believes that Family Guy demonstrates how Americans are willing to follow instructions from celebrities, but not willing to admit that they are. MacFarlene believes that no amount of censorship will change the harsh nature of society. Scenes from Family Guy are coarse but have underlying meaning. Family Guy tries to break down Taboos. Peacocke points out one of Freud’s theories of the unconscious mind that people are animalistic and have aggressive impulses.     Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and when it comes to the television series, Family Guy, everyone does. A person either loves the series or absolutely hates it. Antonia Peacocke voiced her opinion on the hit series in her article, Family Guy and Freud: Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious. At first she was just another addition to the other Family Guy haters, but she eventually came around and saw the humor after the hard to swallow punch lines. “Family Guy does not aim to hurt… creators take certain measures to keep it from hitting too hard.” Peacock says (307). What the creators are reenacting in the shows are not exactly, socially acceptable. However, that’s what draws its viewers, its cutting edge take on society’s problems and differences.     When watching a program, people are focused on the plot, make inferences, and create relationships with characters. Therefore, develops a cognitive exercise for the audience. Johnson informs his readers that there is an interaction between people and a television screen. Some examples he describes are when TV shows allow the viewer to develop a mental outline of a show, when a characters encounter social issues, and giving someone a cultural experience through a TV screen. He includes visuals that show different threads of TV programs, displaying the complexity of their scenes overtime, and how much it challenges the brain. Those graphs associate with Johnson’s term the “Sleeper Curve” (279), which according to him is the most debased form of mass diversion. He says that even if it is just reality television, violent content on TV or video games, and children shows, it still helps people become perceptive.     People all over the world turn on their television each night and watch a few moments to a few hours of television and it is hard to miss a reality show which on almost any channel. If they were to pause on one of these shows they might not know it but they would bettering themselves on a personal level. Based on the ideas of Steven Johnson the average person could learn a thing or two from reality TV. In his article called, “Watching TV Makes You Smarter” Johnson states that; "For decades, we've worked under the assumption that mass culture follows a path declining steadily toward lowest-common-denominator standards, presumably because the "masses" want dumb, simple pleasures and big media companies try to give the masses what they want. But as that 24 episode suggests, the exact opposite is happening: culture is getting more cognitively demanding, not less."(214). Johnson talks explicitly about what a scholar might call the “dumbing down of America”, which in his mind is completely false. Watching reality television in his mind makes a person more aware of the everyday occurrences that happen. The major point first made in Johnsons article is based on his theory called, “The Sleeper Curve”. This theory is about how: “television alters the mental development of young people for the better” (215). Johnson talks about reality TV affecting younger generations in a positive light and helping with personal development. Another major topic discussed is how; “multiple threads in new television episodes are much more complex than old television shows.” In talking about this Johnson refers to the Mary Tyler More show being cookie cutter whereas reality TV today has real life issues.
