Rochel just completed her five-paragraph essay and exhaustedly heads upstairs suppressing a yawn. After tiredly getting on her pajamas, she mechanically lifts her toothbrush, smears on a generous amount of toothpaste and proceeds to brush her teeth. Her mind is wandering to how she will pass her test tomorrow, what she should wear on Rosh Chodesh and if she should go with a salad or a wrap for lunch the next day. She then monotonously cleans her toothbrush, rinses her mouth and turns of the faucet unbeknownst to the fact that that extra minute she took out of her nightly schedule saved her much time and aggravation. Tooth brushing seem to be an insignificant act we unconsciously do every day. However, brushing the teeth is important because it helps maintain oral health, it reduces bad breath and gives the brusher a cleaner and whiter smile.…

Dental hygienist use ultrasonic scalars, sonic scalars, X-ray machines, and hand held scalars. Ultrasonic tools work by sound wave vibrations. They can cycle up to 50,000 per second, scraping away plaque and tartar from teeth. They cannot be used on a patient that has a pacemaker because the electromagnetic fields from these scalars may cause the pacemaker to stop working. Before using an ultra-sonic scalar, it is important to ask each and every patient if they have heart conditions requiring them to have a pacemaker. There are sonic scalars that also remove tartar and plaque on teeth. These scalars use compressed air and water to go deep into the gums to remove pieces of food and plaque. Sonic scalars do not interfere with pacemakers and are safe to use on all patients. Dental hygienist also use x-ray machines. X-ray machines are used to see pictures of patients jaw and teeth. Dental hygienist take and develop these picture for the dentist to use and review before working on a patient. Another tool is the hand held tool. Fluoride has been remarkably successful in reducing the burden of dental caries. While the rise in dental caries, which has occurred in many countries, has been due to an increase in sugar consumption, the fall in caries has been due to the increased use of fluorides. Over 50 years ago, fluoride in drinking water was shown to protect against caries development. Since then, much research has shown that fluoride delivered in ways other than in water also protects against dental caries. These methods include: solutions, gels, toothpastes, mouthrinses, tablets, salt, milk, varnishes, mousses, and slow-release devices. It is common to class these as those providing a systemic effect (where fluoride is swallowed intentionally) and those providing a topical effect (formulated not to be swallowed). However, there is much overlap since these 'systemic' methods provide an important topical effect, and some of these 'topical' agents are swallowed, providing some systemic effect. Another way of classifying these methods is automatic, home-care and professional care. All are effective: they can be used in combination, with increased effectiveness, and the task is to choose appropriately to maximise benefit, especially for those with the greatest need, and at least cost. The World Health Organization has repeatedly promoted the appropriate use of fluorides, as illustrated in the statement adopted in May 2007 in Geneva by the Sixtieth World Health Assembly.…
