Ways to Control Water Pollution

With major water reservoirs drying up in the Southeast, the United States government is projecting that within the next five years over 38 of its states will face serious water shortages. And of the water that will remain, today’s serious issues will influence our future unless we find successful ways to control water pollutionor it will eventually disrupt life on our planet as we know if we do not. The sources of water pollution are varied– ranging widely from waste, excess, population growth, urban growth, increasing temperatures, and increasing flooding and drought. And each source requires an individual solution to develop a correct answer.
Requiring responsibility and involvement in the problems of water pollution, every human who lives on this planet needs to become knowledgeable about their local water resources. Ways to control water pollution should be something everyone practices in order to combat harmful wastes which eventually end up in sewage treatment plants or landfills. Adequate water planning needs to be boldly approached regarding ways to control water pollutionconservation, recycling, desalination, and stricter controlsin order to keep adequate water supplies for our future generations. Over $300 billion dollars are estimated by our government for upgrading pipes in the United States to handle a newer and more reliable water supply system for the country. The days of cheap water are over.
One way to control water pollution is to carefully observe which nutrients are needed on the yard before fertilizers are applied, wisely choosing alternatives methods. If fertilizers are applied, make sure they do not run off into nearby surface waters, also keeping any type of pet waste, leaves, litter, and plant residue out of storm drains or gutters. Planting trees and brushes to hold back flooding areas and slopes help maintain water in much needed areas, used throughout the world for not only ways to control water

Water contamination is vastly becoming an alarming issue across the world. We rely on clean water to survive, yet right now we are heading towards a water crisis. Changing climate patterns are threatening lakes and rivers, and key sources that we tap for drinking water are being overdrawn or tainted with pollution (www.nrdc.org). Clean and plentiful water is the cornerstone of prosperous communities. Yet as we enter the 21st century, swelling demand and changing climate patterns are draining rivers and aquifers and pollution is threatening the quality of what remains. NRDC is integrating our expertise in pollution prevention, water efficiency and climate change to sustain America's precious water resources, working to advance smart water efficiency policies to ensure that communities get the water they need while keeping our lakes, rivers, and streams full and healthy (www.nrdc.org).…

Water scarcity is increasing worldwide and dramatically affecting first world nations such as Spain, Australia, and the United States. All nations are now starting to recognize that the world's water is a finite resource, and that resource is being drastically altered in both availability and quality by development, climate change and population growth. In the United States, the Colorado River is experiencing rapid declines in volume. Recent studies and data suggest that the changes in frequency, intensity, and timing of the availability of water will have substantial impact on the way we live our lives in the 21st century and beyond. As Letmathe Brakeck said, “I am confident that, under present conditions and with the way water is being managed, we will run out of water long before we run out of fuel.”…

Americans expect safe and affordable drinking water that is delivered to their homes on demand. Unfortunately, our water infrastructure suffers from a problem. Although we build these devices, we often fail to maintain them. Neltner states that we need a smarter investment, stricter oversight, regular coordination and more public transparency to ensure that safe drinking water is provided. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2011 Drinking Water Infrastructure Needs Survey, the nation’s aging water infrastructure needs about $400 billion in capital improvements over the next 20 years (as referenced in Neltner, 2016, p. 593). That amount is a dozen times more money than the federal government has invested in drinking water since 1997. Despite the fact that the burden for these upgrades rests with the local utility and its customers, Congress needs to do more to improve America’s drinking water. This is important in areas where the customers are likely to be unable to cover the costs of the loans. The government needs to work together to create alternative funding for these necessary improvements. State water officials and utilities need a reliable federal partner. The EPA needs to provide more guidance to the state and local partners. In conclusion, there needs to be an honest and open dialogue regarding the state of our nation’s water infrastructure. By working together and committing to investing additional capital and updating old policies, we can keep our country's’ water…

Collectively the United States is ranked as the greatest consumers of water worldwide; a startling fact for a country that cannot support its own unrivaled demands (Barlow, 2007). The United States is now crucially dependent on nonrenewable groundwater for a staggering 50% of its daily water usage (Barlow, 2007). In addition to such formidable numbers, citizens of the United States use and waste up 80-100 gallons or 454 liters of water per day (Perlman, 2009). The United States simply doesn’t possess enough fresh water or renewable sources of water to keep up with its gross demands. Nearly 40% of U.S waters are deemed unsafe for recreational activities such as fishing and even swimming (Barlow, 2007). The Ogallala Aquifer accounts for 95% of the United State’s groundwater, but it is being pumped so rapidly, that not enough rainwater is provided the chance to replenish the source. As a result 12 billion cubic meters (bcm) a year is extracted a year which amounts to 325 bcm of total depletion; equal to the yearly flow of eighteen Colorado Rivers (BBC, 2000). At the current rates, thirty-six states stand to confront similar water crisis compared to California within the next five years (Barlow, 2007). As, the United States water crisis continues to spiral violently downhill, its neighbor, Canada has already quickly followed this American trend.…
