We Are Not Created Equal In Every Way Analysis

Joan Ryan, from the San Francisco chronicle, in her article “We Are Not Created Equal in Every Way” provides us with a theme, that in a society which promotes equality; we can not escape individual's inherent inequalities.Ryan writes about the story of Fredrika Keefer’s , an 8 year old ballet dancer, and her mother, Krissy Keefer's, lawsuit against the San Francisco Ballet School for not accepting Fredrika’s application because, to put it bluntly, Fredrika was too overweight. Ballet dancers are known for having a slender physique and in the world of ballet not meeting this specific body type results in a failed ballet career, and possible eating disorders. Ryan argues that the ballet school had the right to deny Fredrika’s application, equating it to someone being denied acceptance to UC
This is not to say that one couldn’t learn to be patient or that one couldn’t train to excel at athletics but unless one is willing to put in the effort our available opportunities will remain scarce. Sadly, even further still, we will come to find that even with hard work there will still be options forever inaccessible to us. Our scope of opportunity is limited by our life choices, age, and the “lottery of life”. Were I to not go to school, were I to take hard drugs, were I to slack responsibilities, the amount of options available to me and the quality of those options would drastically decrease. By not choosing the best life choices I end up limiting what is available to me and any dreams and ambitions I may have had would be all but gone. Nevertheless, it is possible to turn one’s life around given enough time but sadly this option would only be available to those lucky few who are relatively young and healthy. The most limiting and conflicting factor of all is the “lottery of life”, the location and set of circumstances associated with your birth .
