It is obviously about a group of young people who are excluded from society. They do not seem to have much of an individual identifier. They are supposed to go to school so they are adolescents, not adults. They have begun dealing in the illegal affairs, probably with alcohol during prohibition. They live with the feeling that they will die soon, probably in gang violence and they seem to be fatalistic about it.
To me this poem describes the bottom line of the well known ghetto life. It describes the desperate an what they need other than the usual what they want the money. Without actually telling us all about the seven young men it does tell us about them. The poem tells of men’s fears, their ambitions and who they think they are versus who they really are.
The poetic devices are the choice of slang creates a powerful jazz mood. All of the lines are very short and the sound on each step really pops. There were few rhymes to craft an effective sound and image of the life she perceives with these devices the author manages to take full control of her rhyme and cultivates a morally inspiring poem. I definitely like reading a poem aloud. My daughter helps me to find the rhythm of the language, of finding the author’s intent. I think that I process information best visually.
