1. How does Myrtle’s apartment reflect her personality and position in life?
According to Nick’s description, we know that Myrtle’s apartment is not very big, relatively, it is small. However, Myrtle places a set of furniture which is too large to the apartment. This behaviour reflects that she is not fashionable and has no taste at all. The reason why she buys the set of unsuitable furniture is she tries to pretend to be upper-class. She thinks that rich people would buy big furniture to show their wealth so she does as well. Also, she hangs a picture on the wall. It’s the only picture in her apartment. She tries to be well-educated and intellectual but she doesn’t success. Furthermore, in her apartment, there are some scandal magazines, which mean she is very gossip.
In her apartment, we can know Myrtle tries to pretend she is upper class and well-educated because she wants to match Tom. She acts like she is better than Daisy.
2. Can you point out some ways in which the McKees and Myrtle are similar?
The Mckees and Myrtle they also want to be upper-class. In the party, they show off what they are proud of themselves. Myrtle keeps changes dresses elaborately during the party. However, she doesn’t confess it and acts like she doesn’t care what she is wearing. Myrtle pretends she is generous, like the rich. She told Mrs McKee that she will give the dress to her as soon as she gets tired of the dress. Moreover, she said she would like to make a list of all things she gets, avoid forget those things. Actually, she wants to show off what she gets. Mr McKee pretends that he is a talented and artistic photographer.
