What is HTML?
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is an authoring language that sets up web pages that can be viewed on the World Wide Web.
The Development of HTML versions and backwards compatibility issues:
HTML 1: In 1980 Tim Berners-Lee created a system to use and share documents and later on in 1991 lead to “HTML tags” also known as the first HTML.
HTML 2: In 1993 browsers added their own tags to HTML and this caused confusion. Dan Connolly and colleagues from the W3C collected all the tags from the different browsers and put them into a draft document creating HTML 2.
HTML 3.0: Dave Raggett wanted to improve HTML with new ideas hopefully releasing HTML 3, but the draft document was too big and the idea was soon dropped.
HTML 3.2: The US Navy used a CALS table model and requested that Raggett make them a draft that suited them this was a development that lead to HTML 3.2.
HTML 4.0: The W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) recommended a new HTML (HTML 4.0) which consisted of new tags , style sheets and script frames, this table became official in 1998.
HTML 4.01: It was recommended by the W3C, offers 3 variations like HTML 4.0 and contains about 7 changes; one being an attribute can be coded as att and a new tag.
HTML 5: Is in current development its format will consist of new elements, new attributes, full CSS3 support, video and audio, 2D / 3D graphics, Local Storage, and Web Applications.
