while others may be surrounded by plenty of family members but experiencing loneliness. Adolescents and young adults experience loneliness when they have a small social group (quantity of their social network), while older adults experience loneliness when they are not satisfied with their social interactions, for instance, not having someone to sit and talk with over coffee.
Prof. Keating went on to discuss a research study by ____________that was conducted about loneliness among Canadian older adult who was immigrants (REFERENCE). She shared her thoughts and evidence from the research study about why Canadian immigrants were lonely. The aim of the study was to examine factors that cause loneliness in immigrants vs non-immigrants among the older population in Canada. Data was collected from Statistic Canada’s general social survey, cycle 22 on social network of a sample size of 3699 Canadians who were over the age of 65. Results of the study showed that loneliness among older immigrants in Canada was higher than older adults who were born in Canada. Family connections and how often one saw them did not always decrease the risk for loneliness espcially if there are tensions among members. Older adults felt that interacting with relatives felt like it was out of obligations, which did not help to alleviate their loneliness. The study also mentioned that immigrants who joined social groups put them at a higher risk for loneliness due to culture loss. The limitations of this research was that the reasons for coming to Canada, the age they came to Canada and how long they were in Canada at the time of the survey was not included.
