Week 1 LOM ASSIGNMENT
Question 1:
a) When I used the text book “Language of Medicine” I was able to get some help but I got more help understanding the meaning from the medical dictionary and from online. Cystoscopy I found this to help me with the meaning: {cysto + scopy}It is an examination of the bladder using a cystoscope. (A thin tubular instrument with a light used to examine the interior of the bladder) {cysto + scope}|
Cysto = an abnormal sac-like structure containing fluid, gas, or a semisolid material
Scopy = viewing; seeing; observing; For example, endoscopy
Scope = an instrument used for viewing or examining. For example endoscope
b) With the definition from online I found this to help me understand better.
Cystoscopy is endoscopy of the urinary bladder via the urethra. It is carried out with a cystoscope.
Endoscopy = looking inside and typically refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons
Urethra = is a tube that connects the urinary bladder to the urinary meatus for the removal of fluids from the body.
Question 2: What suffix is Jessica thinking of that means surgery?
In trying to find out which suffix was used in I found four different suffixes that have surgery in its meaning: surgical procedure -centesis surgical fixation -pexy surgical removal -ectomy surgical repair -plasty
I think she is talking about -centesis for a surgical procedure.
Question 3: Why would it be important for a Biller and Coder to know the difference between the two suffixes?
In the suffixes for surgery I have come across 4 different suffixes. Knowing which suffix is being used will help in the correct coding for the patient. That will help with billing the insurance and then help with what was done and not done yet to the patient. The cost of the different procedures will go with what the correct coding is for the patient. That will also go with the right coast for the insurance to bill the
