How Is Cardiovascular Fitness Measured?
Questions
1. What does a blood pressure measurement of 110/70 mean?
The top number 110 is the highest and is called the systolic pressure. This measures the pressure inside your arteries when your heart is beating. The bottom number is called the diastolic pressure and it measures the pressure in the arteries in between the heartbeats. A healthy blood pressure is when the systolic number isn’t greater than 120 and the diastolic number isn’t less than 80.
2. What is your resting heart rate?
My resting heart rate is 76 beats per minute which is normal. For adults the normal resting heart rate is between 60 – 100 beats per minute. To measure my heart rate I put my index finger on my neck near the windpipe where I can feel my pulse. Then I counted the number of beats for 15 seconds and multiplied by 4. I had 19 heart beats in 15 seconds. 19 X 4 = 76.
3. Which of the following resting pulse and resting blood pressure results would be typical of a well-conditioned athlete? 72 and 150/90; 48 and 110/80; 66 and 120/95; 84 and 110/75.
Since athletes have training programs that work out and condition their heart muscles to pump a larger amount of blood, athletes tend to have a lower resting heart rate because more blood is pumped with each contraction. So an athlete would have a resting pulse and resting blood pressure in the 48 and 110/80 range.
