Westlake Lanes memo
MEMORANDUM
TO: Shelby Givens (General Manager, Westlake Bowling Lanes - here onwards "WBL")
FROM: Kumar Gaurav (Candidate # 75745133, UBC)
SUBJECT: Recommendation towards business planning for WBL
DATE: 2nd September 2013
Key Issues:
Shelby Givens, G.M of WBL could not get the business on track to repay the funds the board had loaned it 16 months before. In Jan 2010, the business profited for the 1st time in two years. But, now she wants to decide on a future direction for the business, so that the debt payment can be speedy and her job gets more interesting. She also deals with multiple external and internal challenges, such as, boosting employee morale, revamping the underperforming F&B section, and growing the customer base.
Analysis:
External Analysis
Porter 's five forces analysis*:
1) Competitive rivalry within the industry*
The rivalry within this industry is very low due to WBL 's strategic location and the loyalty of its patrons. The setup does face some competition from non-orthodox industries, such as,

soccer practice, and restaurants ' happy hours. Therefore, we can categorise this force to be of medium effect.
2) Bargaining power of suppliers*
Due to the high availability of suppliers, this force can be categorised as low. In an advent of suppliers raising the prices, WBL can easily find a substitute.
3) Bargaining power of customers*
Since 52% of the surveyed customers fall in the mid-teenage to middle age group (the money holding group), these customers hold the key to financial success of WBL. "Furthermore, 45% of the surveyed customers cited lack of time being the reason for not bowling, WBL needs to save its customer base"** This force can be categorised as high.
4) Threat of new entrants*
Due to the strategic location of Westlake lanes, i.e. in downtown Raleigh and closer to neighbourhoods and

Buying power of customers is medium to high. The demand is quite elastic to a change in price as seen when Givens increased the price by 20%. League participation, recreational traffic and food and beverage sales all dropped. However, overall revenues only dropped by 3%. As well, there are many activities other than bowling around the downtown core which increase the power of buyers. The largest demographic segment is ages below 16 and over 55. Both these segments possess significant buying power; the former in due to their parents and the latter due to their stable disposable income.…

Porter’s five competitive forces within the industry are very important to recognize; however, rivalry amongst existing competitors appears to be the strongest force in this instance. Industries offering substitute products does not really come into play here because wholesale stores generally deal with larger quantities of their products. Bargaining power of suppliers is also an important factor in a sense that in order to keep their prices low, the company must develop a good relationship with their suppliers. The threat of new entrants is relatively low, but the bargaining power of buyers is an important factor to take into consideration. Customers are always looking for lower prices and the demand is pretty high.…

Every country exhibits its own unique culture and it is essential to pander to the preferences of each individual culture. A system that works in the United States is not likely to see the same level of success in Bangladesh, unless serious modifications are made to the business model. To overcome this challenge, the company will conduct independent research and use paid consultants to determine how to tailor the brand’s image for success in vastly different cultures. As time progresses, the company will be able to assess strengths and weaknesses by testing different models in each regional area. Gaining insightful knowledge about each country’s cultural preferences will allow the company to attain a competitive advantage.…

As Cathy Cochran-Lewis highlighted, it is clear that WFM has a high price perception. However, WFM make little effort to combat this image. Instead, price appears to be a “taboo” subject. No prices are listed on the WFM website and all recipes featured on the Facebook page do not include prices, despite using exclusive WFM products. This acts to reinforce people’s perception of WFM as a high-priced store.…

Through the situation analysis it is apparent that the root cause for excess inventory is a rapid growth in production capacity due to technological investment but less significant growth in its single high-end market segment (See Root Cause Analysis in Appendix D). The two sides of the decision to either cut prices or introduce a new line are best highlighted by the interests and concerns of Jim Hargrove and Rita Sanchez: (See full Stakeholder Analysis in Appendix A for details)…
