Whaling Persuasive Speech
I believe that whaling is a serious issue in many areas of the world. Some countries believe that it is okay to kill whales for sport, but I think that it is wrong, because the way they are hunted is cruel, we don’t even really use the materials that come from killing them, and many of the whales being hunted nowadays are becoming endangered, or are close to extinction. Although some people whale hunt as part of a tradition in their beliefs or religion, but I think we should still put and end to it.

Whale hunting is a very cruel, horrific practice. People would kill the whales using large harpoons, and sometimes it would take up to 35 minutes before the whale is completely dead, which is a lot of pain that was caused upon the animal. We have had many years to study these beautiful creatures, and we have found lots of information, proving that the whales are very intelligent mammals, who have the capability to feel pain and suffering. So by killing them this way, making them suffer for that long of a time before they died, is a horrific act.

Although the ban did stop some regions from hunting these creatures, many countries still practiced it. Japan is the highest supporter of whale hunting. According to the website www.theguardian.com , they say that “ Japan normally kill up to 1,000 minke whales, and 100 endangered humpback and fin whales per year,” which is very reminiscent. But the interesting thing is, they normally don’t use all of the parts as they should. In 2006, 83% of the people in Japan (one of the last places that continues to over fish the whales), have NOT eaten whale meat in a while, or haven't eaten whale meat in their life. So why kill the

The documentary film Blackfish which we saw in our class, was very interesting and scary. The documentary was based on a true story of a killer whale killing its trainer of many years. Till this day no know will ever know what clicked in that mammals head to turn against its trainer the way that it did. When looking at the film, it shows mostly the dangerous side of the mammal and how it was captured at such a young age, and the history it had with killing. It doesn’t really show the side of Sea World, or the trainers that train these mammals to become the best performers that they are. Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite uses shocking footage and emotional interviews to present a convincing case against keeping these wild animals for human entertainment. The thesis of my essay is we should not abuse animals for our own enjoyment. Yes I too have taken my children to Sea World many times, and love seeing these beautiful sea animals, but when you stop and think one second the treatment they actual receive to become what they are today, it is just very harsh. Just like human beings, these animals too like to be respected and treated nicely. Torture will never get them to become what the trainer wanted them to be.…

Using killer whales as entertainment is unfair/inhumane, and not appropriate for others enjoyment because in the film, “Blackfish,” dates back to 1983, where a man is interviewed on capturing Tilikum, who showed emotion while telling his story. Tilikum was taken away from the wild, his mother, and family as a baby whale. As the men were trying to capture Tilikum, the mother and rest of the family were around the boat, calling for each other, and trying to help Tilikum to get away. It is such a sad thing to see or even think about, imagine someone just taking what doesn’t belong to them. The men showed no feelings or emotion on just taking the baby whale away and not even caring. “…killer whales that live in captivity more likely to suffer…

Many social organizations tried to let people to stop whaling activities, such as World Wildlife Fund (WWF), International Whaling Commission (IWC), Greenpeace, etc. Those organizations are all nonprofit organizations which stated the importance of whale protection. In recent years, whaling forbidding has achieved a great success. Most of world traditional whaling countries signed to end their “commercial whaling activities” except three countries, those are: Japan, Iceland and Norway.…

“ .. Animals they hold are better off in human care and perhaps even enjoy it.” ("WSPA") Yes, because they really enjoy dying. We’re pretty much killing them for our own entertainment. The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre says that they’re “helping whales and dolphins reproduce and are raising awareness for species survival”, when actually, having these mammals captive is the cause of their population decreasing. The aquarium is there for them when they’re sick, and they try to do the best of their ability to save them, but in some cases, they can’t. They can’t stop the whale from endless circling. They can’t perk their drooping dorsal fins. They can’t keep them from getting depressed. And they can’t stop the harmful things the whales are going to do to people.…

Whaling has been a Japanese tradition, which goes back to prehistoric times, so Japan has a strong historical connection with the sea as a source of food. But there are other countries that used to have such a connection to the sea as well, for example France and the US. Those countries ‘set sail’ to whaling or limited their whale hunts when the IWC put a ban on commercial whaling back in 1986. So Japan has no traditional reason to keep up the whale hunt. A country cannot, or may not keep up something like this just because it is a tradition.…

The history of whaling has been consistently marked by irregularities and breaches despite an international concern about the protection of whales for over fifty years. From the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling in London in 1949, which approved the creation of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), has held 56 meetings (in addition to five stages) to discuss the future of these animals (McMillan, 1999).…

I don't even think that the people care about the whales I mean you pull the animals right out of the ocean which is their home and rip them apart from their own family if that happened to me I would be pretty made. Whales in captivity have killed many people so I don’t even think it is safe to put them in captivity, they did not kill anyone in the ocean but now they are because they are in captivity. Whales are so friendly to us they have never done anything to hurt us but, we are hurting them, just…

While they are not an endangered species, they are hunted mercilessly by the fish industry especially off the coasts of China, Japan and parts of the North Pacific by the Russians (Ivashchenko 73). This extreme hunting has left the oceans with an unknown number of whales and thus, keeping them in facilities such as SeaWorld helps to replenish their numbers. However, since SeaWorld no longer catches or buys wild whales and instead breeds them for the very purpose of continuing the gene pool as Hardgrove describes in his book, it doesn’t help any animals still left in the wild. In fact, having such high numbers in captivity, while still allowing whaling practices to continue, we encourage whaling to go on. We can’t both praise whale captivity, and leave whales in nature to fend for themselves if we are really worried about…

You have probably been to an aquarium before and seen whales doing different tricks and stunts with his or her trainer. You think they are having a blast, but what you don't know is that the whales are actually really miserable. Keeping killer whales in captivity is dangerous for the whales and the humans, but no one is doing anything to stop it. Whales can be very harmful around people, and an aquarium is an unsafe habitat for whales and other sea creatures kept in captivity. Above most animals, whales are very dangerous around people.…

Imagine that you are at soccer practice, a few days before a game. You sprain your ankle in the middle of drills, and you have to sit out for the rest of practice with ice. When you go home that night, your ankle is puffy and you can barely walk on it. Even though you are in tremendous pain, you still play at the game that you did not want to miss. Does this make sense? It is common sense to stop doing something if there is already a problem. You do not want to make it worse. In Japan, people catch and kill whale species that are already endangered. While some people believe that this is perfectly ok, whaling needs to be stopped because some whales are endangered and whale meat is not even used anymore.…

    Why Is Whaling Wrong

Whaling has been a controversial issue around the world for centuries. . The hunting of whales has been going on since the prehistoric times, but the controversy of whether it is right or wrong didn’t begin until about one hundred years ago (Wesolowski ). It has turned into an ethical debate about whether or not it is right. While some people around the world see the hunting of whales as immoral, there are countries and cultures view it the same as hunting any other animal and being an important part of their cultures. Each group backs their arguments up with their own ethical beliefs which makes it difficult to decide what truly the right way is.…

One reason why is, “The sheer killing of whales, coupled with Japan's failure to provide evidence of scientific research, could be conducted without lethal means or by killing fewer whales” (Japan's whaling must 1). This provides support by showing that if Japan even is wailing for science, it could be conducted. Zelko tells us, “Australia is now challenging Japan's claim of scientific whaling in the International Court of Justice, alleging that it is simply a cover for the continuation of commercial whaling” (1). This shows that Australia is trying to prove that Japan is not actually whaling for science, but covering to continue whaling commercially, meaning whales are being unnecessarily killed. This proves that whaling should be banned because whales are being sacrificed illegally by Iceland and…
