INTRODUCTION Media has always been a huge influence on the way we grow and develop as human beings, and this has become increasingly prevalent over the years. This is true, as we often borrow a lot of our morals, values, and beliefs from the media that we are exposed to. Gender is subjective, as it “encompasses the shared understanding of how women and men, girls and boys, should look and act” (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p. 91). These social roles are considered the norm, and society is determined to conform. Oliver (2012) explained that these socializations occur in order to belong and conform, because we fear alienation. This process of conformity in relation to gender is called gender socialization, where “people learn their gender based behaviour” (Tepperman and Curtis, 2011, p. 92). Gender is constructed culturally, as mentioned before, and thus we have our definitions of masculinity and femininity in our surroundings and upbringings. The notion of what it is to be either gender has since been shaped into something much more narrow-minded. The media suggests the “perfect” man and “perfect” woman, explains Oliver (2012) as there is a certain way that one is supposed to act, dress, act, think, right down to how much money one might make (Gender, para 2.)
