It is 1968, there are thousands of people gathered in New York City to protest the Vietnam War. People are passionately chanting and singing about what they believe in. There are draft cards burning, posters, and a peaceful resistance from a minority group against the war. Events like these were a major part of the late 1960’s and early 70’s; and John Lennon had a major influence and connection to the politics and music of the era. One thing Lennon is famously recognized for is his involvement with the Beatles. As a young adult Lennon disregarded his Aunt Mimi’s advice, dropped out of the Liverpool College of Arts, and pursued his rock and roll career with his two friends: Paul McCartney and George Harrison. The three later added drummer Ringo Starr to the new music group and became the Beatles. The 4 of them embarked on a very successful career, largely due to Lennon’s impactful lyrics and mesmerizing melody. Many of the Beatles hits are Lennon-McCartney compositions including Across the Universe, All You Need is Love, Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, I Am the Walrus, Let it Be, Strawberry Fields Forever, and many more. To this day the Beatles are recognized with the 2nd most amount of gold and platinum releases and history (A7). John Lennon used his voice in the music industry to spread his peaceful views and political activism. Some examples of his most politically aware songs are Imagine, Working Class Hero, Gimme Some Truth, Power to the People, Happy Xmas (War is Over), Attica State, and more.
