In 1765 Britain had ordered that colonists were to house and feed British soldiers whenever necessary, better known as the Quartering Act. That same year quite a few other events followed continuing to build animosity against the British. Unknown to the colonies, previous taxed that were imposed by Britain had been hidden or indirect. The Stamp Act now required taxes on items like newspapers, marriage licenses and other small paper items. Smugglers began to increase their activities in an effort to avoid being affected by taxes but in turn these activities led to more British troops. Following in 1770 the Boston Massacre occurred which was essentially started as a street fight but became one of the biggest contributing factors to the War for American Independence. The Tea Act and Boston Tea Party in 1773 resulted in the Intolerable Acts in 1774. These acts were passed in response to the Boston Tea Party and places restrictions on the colonists including outlawing town meetings or closure of the Boston Harbor. The colonists responded to the Intolerable Acts by creating an association boycotting British goods in 1774. The first occurrence of open warfare came in 1775 when British troops tried to seize colonial goods and kidnap Samuel Adams and John Hancock. British troops lost 70 soldiers and were forced to retreat. Ultimately the American Revolution grew out of increased restrictions placed on the colonies by the British.
