The Sword was the weapon of choice for medieval knights, The knight wielded the sword in his strongest arm, with the reins of his horse in the other hand, The sword had a leather grip on it with varying metal decorations on the end, called a pommel.. Moving up from the grip is a bar of metal called a cross-guard. This protected the knights hands, The Sword starts out with a thick blade and gradually gets narrower and sharper towards the end. had plate armour they would hack at their armour, to eventually break it and kill them.
The Long handled battle axe was the second weapon of choice a medieval knight would use. The battle axe has a long handle and was mainly used with two hands at the bottom of the handle for control. Some knights used the axe with one hand just below the middle of the handle so they could hold a shield to protect themselves from the incoming swings from his opponent. The disadvantage to this method was that they couldn’t swing the axe with as much force as if they had two hands. The axe was reasonably light so the knight didn’t get tired too quickly. It was also durable to absorb the shock when hitting someone or something.
The Spear was a durable weapon.
The knight held the spear near the centre of the handle so that the weight was balanced when carrying the spear. The Knight would have thrown the spear over the heads of his troops to get it over the top of the opponent's shield. The spear was held and thrown like a javelin for distance and force. Spears were more difficult to use than other weapons as they had to be thrown correctly to get to the desired destination.
The Shield was used by the knight to defend himself from incoming arrows, swords, battle axes and maces that were being swung at him. The knight would wield a battle axe or sword in their strongest hand and a shield in the other. The shield would either be round or oval shaped and on the back of the shield there was a leather strap to put his arm through, and a piece of leather to hang onto. The shield had a metal circle in the middle and some metal pieces on the rim to make it stronger and more durable. The shield could also be used as a weapon - a good blow to the head would knock out the …show more content…
opponent.
The Mace was also known as the club, The mace had a wooden handle and gradually increased in size along the shaft, similar to a baseball bat. The mace often had iron nails studded around the end, which would pierce the opponent's armour and skin. The knight would try and aim for the enemies head to knock the opponent out..
Armour
What was the knights armour made out of in medieval England 1066-1500?
How effective was the knights armour in medieval England 1066-1500?
Chainmail and Plate.
Chainmail Armour weighed around thirty pounds (about 13kg). The knights would wear chainmail on their chest, back, hands, arms, shoulders and neck. All this weight on them felt uncomfortable and heavy. To try and make the chainmail more comfortable the knights wore a cloak underneath it to prevent rubbing and to reduce the strain on their shoulders. Chainmail was much more flexible than plate armour, as it was made out of thousands of small metal rings. Chainmail was popular as armour until it was realised that it could be pierced with swords and other sharp objects.
Plate Armour was better than chain mail, as it covered most of the body in plates of armour that you couldn't see through. The knight would have had a metal helmet that covered the whole face with grooves to see through. Some helmets also had small holes where the mouth was to help them breathe. Knights wore some chainmail underneath the weak spots on the armour, such as the armpit, which otherwise would have been exposed. The plate armour’s main disadvantage was that it restricted movement and could not cover every part of the
