of the United States. In time Texas joined the United States after President Andrew Jackson’s term ended.
Mexican-American War President James K. Polk believed the idea of manifest destiny so the U.S expanded. He wanted California and New Mexico to be with the nation but his offer to Mexico was declined. Then Mexicans invaded U.S territory and spilled blood on American soil. Congress toke that as a threat and declared war. The Mexican-American War began and whenever the Mexicans fought the Americans they would always have a lot of casualties. Later there would be a treaty called the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War. Mexico acknowledged the annexation of Texas to the U.S and agreed to sell California and the rest of the northern territory of the Rio Grande. Texas was finally free from Mexico.
Louisiana Purchase At the start of the 17th century France had settlements all over the Mississippi River valley and region. In 1762, France gave west Louisiana of the Mississippi River to Spain. Later in 1801, Spain signed a treaty with France to give back the Louisiana Territory to them. The United States felt uncomfortable because Americans had been using the Mississippi River and New Orleans’ port freely. Then France started to take control of Louisiana but Spanish authorities revoked a U.S.-Spanish treaty. Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe to handle that issue and shortly before his arrival, the French asked U.S minister Livingston if the United States would like to purchase all of Louisiana Territory. The United States accepted the offer and negotiated to get all of Louisiana. It was stated in “A Noble Bargain” in the textbook, “… he signed a treaty giving Louisiana to the United States in exchange for $15 million” that they have agreed to let United States get Louisiana.
