What Are The Results Of The Four Different Compounds, Ionic Or Covalent?
Record your plan for what kinds of tests you want to run. Make sure you look at the rubric for the method to know what is expected.
Plan or experiment A:

Use four different compounds, (Polarity is irrelevant) and dissolve them in water.
Place a current through the solution in the water.
If it dissolves and conducts electricity, then the compounds will result it's ionic. If it dissolves (and doesn’t conduct electricity), it is covalent.
Create some kind of data table on which to record the results of your tests.

Table for Results Experiment A
Compound

Does it dissolve in water?

Does it conduct electricity?

Boiling and Melting point?

Ionic or Covalent?

We will be mixing ionic compounds in solute-solute and solvent solute interactions. We will be combining sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, nickel and silver and some anions like chloride, sulfate, nitrate, oxalate, phosphate, and hydroxide. We will be seeing which one forms a precipitate or rings. Most likely the anions will be the insoluble. From there we will be making a flow chart that will go accordingly to our experiment.…

The students were handed 10 test tubes with no identification. The students were supposed to design a method in determining what chemical was in each test tube. The list of chemicals is CuSO4, NH4Cl, NaOH, AgNO3, KI, H2SO4, NaBr, CaCl2, HCl, and Pb(NO3)2. The students are expected to determine the chemicals using physical properties, litmus paper, solubility, and the process of elimination. Physical properties, such as the color, can be determined by sight. Litmus paper can be determined through the change of color, if red then it is an acid, if blue then it is a base. Solubility can be determined through reacting two chemicals together and see if a precipitate is created. Previous knowledge of the solubility rules will help disclose whether two chemicals will or will not create a precipitate. When two chemicals do create a precipitate, it will be easy to determine which chemicals they are. In the end, one chemical will be left over.…

When we conducted this experiment, we used distilled water to test if the compounds were transparent when dissolved and white when dried on a glass surface. By using distilled water, we made sure that there weren’t any other minerals in the water that might affect the results. We used a Bunsen burner and heated small samples to see if the compound had a high melting point. Then, we checked if they dissolved in water. We used different beakers and tested if they dissolved in ethyl alcohol. Finally, we used the distilled water & compound solution and a conductivity meter to see if it was electrically conductive or not.…

The ionic and covalent bonds are known to be the strongest chemical bonds. An ionic bond forms when two atoms differ so much in electronegativity that one or more electrons are actually transferred from one atom to the other. Ionic bonds generally occur between a metal and a nonmetal. Due to the existence of ionic bonds, elements that normally would not combine because sharing electrons is either not possible or not practical may be combined to form chemical compounds. A covalent bond forms when two atoms share a pair of electrons. The sharing of one pair of electrons produces a single bond whist the sharing of two or three pairs of electrons produces double or triple bonds. If both atoms are equally electronegative, a nonpolar covalent bond forms. If one atom is slightly more electronegative, a polar covalent bond formulates. Covalent bonds allow the greatest possible combinations of chemical compounds to take place.…

Of all the substances, only two were covalent and two were ionic. The ionic substances, sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, and salicylic acid, came close to the description you requested. The covalent substances, sucrose and salicylic acid, did not match the descriptions. The best substance would definitely be sodium carbonate, since it passed all the tests. Sodium carbonate had a high melting point, so it will be able to last for a long time in the kiln fire. It also is soluble in water, and not in alcohol allowing flexibility of the variety of pots you can make. Also, sodium carbonate is a conductive substance, especially when it is dissolved in water. Other substances like salicylic acid dissolved in water, had low boiling point, and was soluble in alcohol. Sodium chloride did have a high melting point, but it was soluble in alcohol. Sucrose was soluble in water as well, but it had a very low melting point. All the substances except for sodium carbonate did not pass the requirements, and therefore sodium carbonate is the best possible substance.…
