This paper discusses the roles of an OB/GYN (obstetrician and/or gynecologist) and a certified nurse midwife. An obstetrician is a doctor that specializes in taking care of women and specializes in pregnancy care. Similarly, a certified nurse midwife does most of the same thing but technically is not considered a doctor. Through a lot of research, I found out the salaries of each profession and even their hourly wages and how they can change from state to state. After discussing each profession individually, this paper discusses the similarities and differences between the two jobs. They can both are capable of examining, diagnosing, and prescribing medication. They both care for women, and they both provide care for women before giving birth, during the process of labor, and postpartum. Also, they both require a similar amount of education level. Salary is no longer a valid distinction anymore because a nurse that specializes in anesthesia can make more money than some doctors. They even often work together. Even though these two professions relate in many ways, there are ways that they do not relate. For starters, nurses and doctors typically have different undergraduate degrees. An obstetrician will most likely have an undergraduate degree plus an MD, doctor of medicine, or even a DO, doctor of osteopathic medicine. On the other hand, a certified nurse midwife must have their BSN then extra years of education. Obstetricians will also have more responsibility solely because they are a doctor. With this responsibility often times comes more privilege but also more of a burden placed on them.
