Christians believe that God’s love was so strong that he sent his only son to die for everyone who believes in him. When Jesus died on the cross, he saved all believers from sin, death, and the devil. In this way, God Gives all Christians hope. Through sending his son, he gives everyone who believes in him salvation, and redemption.
Christians also have two common religious rituals or sacraments, Baptism and Communion. Communion signifies Fellowship with christ, and baptism signifies identification with christ. Even though it is not directly said in scripture, some people believe that only people who are baptised should receive communion for many reasons. Some people say that baptism should come first because of biblical sequence. A reverend compared it to inviting someone to dinner, but not letting them eat . Mangels also made a great point saying that Jesus wouldn’t turn anyone away from him, and the church shouldn’t either.
The Greeks main focus point of their religion was their legends, or myths. They used there many gods in different myths. They would also use human-like heroes, and mythical creatures. They Passed these myths and stories by telling them to one person to remember, and they later pass it on to others. They used these stories for religious purposes, and also for entertainment. Another reason the myths were told was to answer simple questions that the children would ask. In this religion, the greeks believed that each god had there own power, or thing they ruled over.
For example, Zeus was the god over the other gods. Greeks believed that gods were immortal, and that they couldn’t die. They also thought the gods lived on Mount Olympus, and that they could come to earth and interact with the mortals. thinking this, Greeks welcomed many travelers, in case if it was a god. Gods were what the greeks depended on for almost everything. the gods had human like emotions such as jealousy. The greeks wanted the gods to have favor towards them. They feared that if they angered the gods, the gods would not like them and would make things difficult for the greeks.
The Greeks did many different things to please the gods. For example, while believing in all the gods, each city state was devoted to one god, or a group of gods. throughout the house, different parts were devoted to different gods. Temples were often build in the cities as a place of worship, but they had regular times throughout the day that they would stop what they were doing and worship their gods. There wasn’t an organized church system, so they would honor specific holy
places.
There are many differences and similarities of the true God and the Greek gods and goddesses. One of the biggest differences is the belief of one God, and the belief of multiple gods. The Greeks believe there is a different god for every aspect of life, while Christians believe that the one true god rules over everything. Unlike Christians, the Greeks do not have a book, such as the Bible, to reference to. Since the Greeks do not have a book, and because the Greeks did not write down information about their beliefs, they have changed over the years. The events that Christians believe have not changed because they were written down. Another difference in beliefs is that when Christians die, they will have eternal life with the true God. Greeks have an afterlife that is in the underworld, But it is not a happy place, it is full of the shadowy figures that have died on earth. Another difference is how Christians make mistakes, and can confess their sins, and they will be forgiven, but when the Greeks anger a god, they will not be forgiven, the god will hold a grudge against that person.
The Greeks and Christians have many differences, but they also have many things in common. Origins of these two religions has allowed ancient history to connect these different religions. Christians and Greeks are expected to worship their god or gods. There are some Bible stories, and myths that are similar. For example, the Bible story, Samson, and the Greek myth, Hercules. Another thing that is similar is how the Greek gods come down to earth to interact with the mortals, and how God sent Jesus to earth to save every believer. The Greek Gods encouraged and honored good behavior, similar to how God tells the believers how to act correctly.
The two religions, Christianity, and Greek Mythology have many differences, but they also have many things in common. It is important to learn about other religions that are very different.
