Hinduism and Buddhism are both very similar in certain parts of their beliefs. But they are also very different in some respects. God is a very strong part of the hindu belief system, They believe that god is everywhere and in everything. However, Buddhists believe the contrary. They have rejected all gods and believe only in the three jewels. Both religions believe in the rule of karma. They also both do similar spiritual practices such as cultivation of states of mind and meditation.
One of the major differences between Buddhism and Hinduism is their belief in god/s. Buddhists has always rejected the concept of a superior being or a creator. Instead of following …show more content…
a God, they follow the three jewels. The three jewels are the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. The Buddha jewel means that you should see the Buddha as your spiritual guide and ultimate teacher. The Dharma jewel means the teachings of the Buddha and the enlightenment one will receive when following those rules. The Sangha jewel means all the Buddhists in the world and how one another can learn from each other. Hindus believe in many gods, Atman being the creator of all gods. They believe that their bodies will not function without the presence of a soul. Atman refers to the non-material self, one which never changes. There are zero Buddhist gods whereas there are 330 million Hindu gods. The fact that there are so many different gods in Hinduism shows how important the gods for the religion.
A similarity between the two religions Buddhism and Hinduism is the way they spiritually practice.
In Buddhism, two ways to help achieve enlightenment is to meditate and do yoga. To help achieve enlightenment in Hinduism one must also meditate and do yoga. This shows how similar these two different religions can be. Another similar spiritual practice between these two religions are the gestures made when doing a certain prayer. In both religions this hand gesture is called a mudra. There are many mudras in both religions, a total of one-hundred and eight mudras have been recorded as used in regular rituals. Buddhists and Hindus both have the option to worship at their homes or at temples. The Hindu name for home worship is Puja. Only some Hindus participate with this ritual. The Puja is a ritual that typically happens early in the morning. Before one performs the ritual they must bathe and get dressed. No liquids or foods are allowed to be consumed before the ritual. A Buddhist ritual that can be performed at both home and at a temple is a matra. Mantras are a type of humming that are considered to be sacred sounds by Buddhists. If one performs a mantra, it invokes the powerful attention of Chenrezig, the embodiment of
compassion.
There are many differences and similarities between both religions. So many that one person could not possibly write them all in a measly 500 words. The two major similarities and differences between Buddhism and Hinduism are the belief of god/s and the way they religiously perform. By looking at the beliefs of two different religions and then comparing them, can really show how different, yet similar, religions can be.
