Huck doesn’t want to apologize to the African American man but he does it anyways, it was unlikely for somebody to apologize to an African American man during this time. Through this quote we’re able to see that Huck is yes racist but a little bit less racist than any other character we’ve seen so far. Through Pap’s character portrayal, Twain shows the readers how much racism was implanted into the minds of the people during this time. Southerners had it their way or no way and weren’t really open to any other views. Huck, along with other kids his age were brought him to hate the African American race, they didn’t know why but they just knew that they weren’t supposed to like them.
