One of my most favorite works of art is Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night. I love Van Gogh’s use of symbolism and his expressive use of color and color scheme. While I do enjoy paintings, photography is my favorite art medium. As an aspiring photographer myself, I find comfort in photographs as opposed to paintings and they tend to speak to me a little more. Some of my favorite photographers include Ansel Adams, Uta Barth, Sally Mann, David LaChapelle, and Zach Mazur. Each of these artists are very different from each other, yet I enjoy each of their styles. My least favorite type of art is probably sculpture. I am not real sure as to why this is, I just don’t seem to identify as well with sculptures and I haven’t ever really taken much interest in them. Anything is capable of becoming art. I think that something becomes art once it is accepted by society as being such. It must invoke some sort of emotion within others and hold meaning to us. While each of us has our own idea of what is considered to be good art, and what is bad art a lot of times monetary value plays a big part in determining quality. Art could be determined as being “good” or bad” based on a set of standards that professionals and experts in the field of art set, but I believe for the most part, good and bad art is based largely on opinion. Art is completely subjective to the viewer. We as a society determine good and bad art for ourselves, not for the entire population.

Recently an enslaved man, named Dred Scott, has sued for his freedom. Scott is the slave of a U.S. Army Surgeon, Dr. John Emerson. Emerson first acquired Scott from a man named Peter Blow, and then proceeded to move to Fort Armstrong in Illinois, which we all know is a free state. From there, Dr. Emerson moved Scott to Fort Snelling, located in the Wisconsin Territory. During his stay there, Scott married Harriet Robinson, which would have been unnecessary if he was a slave. Then, in 1843, Dr. John Emerson passed away in the Iowa Territory. After his death, Dr. Emerson’s widow, Irene continued to lease out the Scott family as hired slaves. Three years later, in 1846, Scott offered $300 for his family’s freedom, but Irene refused. After his…

Art is defined as the “expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” Another quality of art is that it is universal. What is art? Although it is a drawn out cliché, the issue must be addressed. The best definition I could come up with is the combination of two definitions. Zaidel believes art attracts attention and elicits an aesthetic-related response.2 This definition is over-inclusive; if anything that attracts attention is art then is a traffic cone art? According to Haselberger, works of art are objects produced with the intention that they be aesthetically pleasing and not merely pragmatically functional.3 This definition is under inclusive, limiting art to solely be “pleasing”. Art attracts attention and elicits an aesthetic-related response but it is beyond functionality. This definition also helps to differentiate between art and tools, which are two similar but not equal things. Art is more about aesthetics while tools are more about functionality.…

The definition of art, according to the Oxford dictionary is described as “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” (Oxford, 2014) Now at a time before I would have to agree with the current definition of art given by Oxford, however I began to experience something quite different at the tender age of eight years old. At this age I was thrust into a world I did not want any parts of, I wanted to stay in my little bubble I called my world and deal with my feelings the way I wanted to. However my mother and therapist thought of another way I could express my feelings and emotions, they thought I should try creative writing and dance.…

Art is considered to vary across culture and also through time. Art considered as a masterpiece by this group of people might not even be appreciated by another group of people. Art changes through time and the value of a certain artistic piece might increase or decrease through time. Art is what defines a culture, thus it is regarded by many as the main (not sure we could say this, I think you wanted to say something else)aspect in a culture’s construction. Art function as an emotional gratification for an individual. It also contributes to social integration and it serves as a social control tool. It also preserves or challenges the status quo.…
