1. How would you define art? What criteria would you use?
-After being in the Creative Arts class my ideas about what art really is and how I would define it has changed. To me art is something that an artist has thought of and then made it. I also think that art should be something that stimulates the senses or the mind in some way. Whether it me a painting with a hidden meaning or music which stimulates your hearing senses.
2. In the coursepack discussion “what is art,” what four pieces do they use as comparative examples and what conclusions do they come to?
-The first piece that they talk about is “Maple Leaves on a River” by Katisushika Hokusi.
-The second is “The Journey of the Sun God Re” which is an Egyptian style painting from a coffin.
-The Third is “The Hudson River Portfolio” by William Wall.
-The fourth is “White Vertical Water” by Louise Nevelson.
-In all four of these pieces of art we obviously see that they have a common theme of rivers. It is strange to think that a theme such as a river can be depicted in so many different ways. The conclusion of comparing these pieces of art is that art can be used to communicate. Now that I have read and studied this more communication is a really good way of describing what art really is. Art communicates emotions or feelings.
3. Identify and explain (in your own words) four different “modes of analysis” as outlined in the coursepack readings.
-The first mode of analysis is called “Iconographic analysis.” I think that we are used to seeing this kind of art where there are symbols and signs within the art that has an important meaning. A lot of times we see these pieces of art related to religious or historical themes.
-The second is called “Biographical analysis.” When we see these types of pieces of art
