Currently, there are very few programs and policies that help the poor with postsecondary education; American capitalism is the underlying cause of the lack of support. Mike Rose spent a year and a half going to community colleges to see those hardships in effect. He believes the disadvantaged should have the same equal opportunities in secondary education. However, such opportunities are being slashed due to government budget cuts. If these budget cuts are permanent, the poor will suffer from economic consequences.

Rose goes to a community college so he can see the effects of “poverty and long-term joblessness” firsthand. He ultimately learned that even though most of the students didn’t finish high school, they did engage actively in their current classes. Rose believes our society would better itself if more people had the opportunity to attend secondary education.
“Sex Ed” by Anna Quindlen:
Quindlen remembers being taught at a young age that teenage pregnancy rates can lower just by learning basic information. However, she explains it is in the nature of teenagers to have sex to be accepted in today’s society. Teenage pregnancies are no longer a “shock factor” in these adolescent stages of life. Ultimately, Quindlen believes sex ed should be taught at home within families.
