At first glance of the cityscape the thought may arise on why crime is not the principle personal concern. However, decades of research suggest poverty is the driving force for crime. The Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote “poverty is the parent of crime.” Nevertheless, poverty, crime and the lack of education are all related.

However, any educational momentum is often crippled by poverty. Many educational and institutional structures have dissipated due to lack of funding. Elementary schools and higher learning institutions alike no longer exist due to impoverished communities. Individuals are not able to obtain the nest education or pursue higher-learning due to poverty.
The solution to the poverty level in Memphis, on a surface level, would be education. It is no secret consistent quality education is lacking in Memphis. As the education levels rise in Memphis, the poverty and the crime will decrease. However, we must not limit education to book smarts.
The citizens of Memphis must be educated holistically. This affords the church a unique opportunity to step in and champion this cause. There is not a better place for someone to become whole, than in the church. Wholeness begins with holiness, when the citizens of Memphis encounter Jesus, then and only then can we hope to truly eradicate the poverty which continues to plague our beautiful
