Crime is a major problem in America and it all leads back to poverty. In the words of Aristotle, “Poverty is the parent of crime,” but was he right? People who tend to have a lower income, or people who have no money, tend to have to steal just to get what they need to survive. In the same way,
due to the overwhelming taxes, many people have to give all the money they have to the government. These people often have little to no money to get food or clothes for their children and or themselves. According to poverty.org, statistics show that children that are not in school, tend to participate in more crime. This is because they have nothing really to do and they are very curious of what the world has to offer.
Similarly, poverty causes health problems. In his article, “10 Reasons Why Cutting Poverty is Good for Our Nation,” Desmond Brown writes, "Poor children are much more likely to have lower birth weight, and infants living in poor households face higher rates of food insecurity..." Infants living in poor households may face higher rates of food insecurity because they have no stable income to buy the foods that they need to survive. In fact, air pollution is linked to kidney problems, lower birth weights and kills over 25 million a year. That is about 7% of our entire U.S population gone each year.
Furthermore, poverty causes damaged communities. "Many people living in poverty are homeless, which puts them on the streets," according to Hannah Cleveland, writer of "5 Effects of Poverty." Due to many financial problems that the people living in extreme penury have, they have no shelter. These people are forced to live in the streets of our local community. In fact, 31% of people that are homeless, live in unsheltered locations. Since these things are happening, it makes it harder for people to enjoy their environment and, it is definitely harder to walk through your town without stepping on something. Likewise, it makes our community look dirtier than it truly is.
Poverty effects America's problems, such as crime, health issues, and damaged communities. We have all of the resources in the world to make our poverty rate decrease. It is up to our generation and future ones to make a positive change in our community and our country. Let's make a change today that will inspire everyone to take action in their towns to end poverty once and for all.
