Symbolism is used to provide meaning to the writing beyond what is actually being described. The short story “Young Goodman Brown” is a perfect example of symbolism, the story is completely symbolic. The major symbol throughout the story is his wife Faith. She puts pink ribbons in her hair to display her faith. The pink ribbons on Faith’s cap is a mixture of white for purity and scarlet for sin. At the beginning of the story Faith is characterized as pure and innocent. However, in the forest her sexuality and flaws come out, she loses it which shows that she is losing her innocence to the Coven. The first example of symbolism that Tobias Wolff gives us is the setting of the story. Implied by the stories title the setting is a snowy forest. The snow, being so cold, is symbolic of the cold relationship that the three hunters; Tub, Frank and Kenny all share with each other. Frank and Tub, once used to be very close, but Frank now has a more close relationship with Kenny but even that friendship is not without its taunting and antagonizing. This is made clear when after Frank tells Kenny that he talks to much, Kenny Says “I won't say a word. Like I won't say…

I strongly agree with the statement ‘the use of symbolism is the best way to shed light on the darker or deeper messages of a text’. A text that exemplifies the statement is Barbara Kingsolver’s novel ‘The Poisonwood Bible’. Symbolism was used in the text to highlight the darker and deeper messages of the text. ‘The Poisonwood Bible’ is a novel about a missionary family, the Prices, who in 1959 move from the U.S. state of Georgia to the village of Kilanga in the Belgian Congo. Kingsolver’s purpose in the text was to tell a story of destruction, not only of the Price family but also of the Congo.…

Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. Symbols are used throughout literature to further explain a major theme. For instance, Ernest Hemingway uses many symbols in “Hills Like White Elephants”. In Hemingway’s short story, the main characters are a man referred to as “the American,” and a women referred to as just “the girl” and sometimes the nickname jig, both the American and the girl are discussing something important but as the readers we do not know exactly what the two characters are communicating about. The symbols used in the short story, such as the landscape, white elephants, the train, and the beaded curtain, gives the readers an…

A symbol is a thing, person, or place that is presented as a representation of a larger mean. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, as the story unravels, the objects which the boys encounter are decoded to provide a deeper meaning. Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. As the narrator tells his story, he refers to the couple as youths and never anything more than that. Carver writes, “They were kids themselves, but they were crazy in love, this eighteen-year-old boy and this seventeen-year-old girl when they married”. Symbolically, Carver means that they were in no means ready to get married due to the fact that they were just kids and not mature enough to make a commitment such as marriage even though they were madly in…

In the village of Salem there is man, Goodman Brown, who is a Christian. He meets a man in the woods, who eerily seems to be expecting Goodman. When the two encounter a woman in the woods, the man is identified by her to be the Devil himself, and her a witch. He also hears the minister and deacon of his church going to the Devil’s ceremony, along with the witch. Goodman thinks that while everyone else is turning to the Devil, he must stay true to God. As the story progresses more, Goodman hears his wife Faith’s voice at the ceremony, which pushes him over the edge and he uses the Devil’s staff to go to the ceremony. Throughout this story, Hawthorne wraps pieces of Romanticism into the plot. There are elements of nature, solitude, and innocence. They help the overall theme of the story emerge because they build up the setting and path for Goodman’s loss of his innocence.…

Crime is an interesting aspect of our every day society. People choose to commit crimes for various motives and intentions. One thing that will always go hand-in-hand with the concept of crime is the idea of innocence. Innocence is something that we are born with and something that we slowly loose as we mature and learn. In the event of a crime, someone is always guaranteed to experience a loss of innocence whether it is the person committing the crime, the victim, or a witness. The nature of crime is not innocent, therefore the results of a crime will not be innocent. As stated above, there are many different types of crime and these types can be seen through film and literature…

In Nathaniel Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter, the forest means different things to different people. To the honorable and respectable members of Puritan , the forest is an evil and frightening place where witches lurk and the devil resides. Symbolism is a literary tool that writers use to carry meaning throughout their stories and to give their work more depth. This technique can be used by the author to do one of two things; he clarify and/or simplify the symbolic meanings within the text to allow his intended meaning to be prevalent and unquestionable, or, he can use it to set up multiple possibilities as to the true meaning of the story, thus leaving this open for interpretation by the reader. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story “The Minister’s Black Veil”, we see many examples of symbolism. This story begins with the congregation turning to find that their minister is wearing a black veil upon his face. Throughout the story the meaning of the veil is questioned by the congregation and eventually…

Symbolism is used all throughout the Bible. Everything in the Bible has a significant meaning and a purpose. Symbolism helps create understanding and depth. It can help make the theme of a story become clearer. Themes alone can sound preachy, and stories alone can sound shallow. Symbolism weaves the two together to create a perfect balance. Symbols are usually used to describe something complex, Jesus used symbols so we could understand his preaching’s. God’s journey with the Israelites is one of the greatest epics ever written. In all good tales symbolism is often used. Both in the old and new testaments three things are often used as symbols; the vine, the olive tree, and the fig tree. These three things come together…

In his dark short story, Young Goodman Brown, Nathaniel Hawthorne explores that everyone has two sides, a good and a bad. This story is based in the town of Salem, Massachusetts, where the historic Salem witch trials took place. This story is an example of what people thought and kind of what went on during the witch trials. At first glance the story is about a man's late-night walk in the forest to meet a man and go on a journey to find meaning, but the story has many different themes and a lot of symbolism thats key in the story. The symbolism can be found throughout the story from different people such as Faith (faith), Goodman Brown and the man in the woods. It can also be found in names and little things like the pink ribbon. Another thing that shows a lot of symbolism and that plays an important part in the theme of the story is the forest.…

The story, “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne has a lot of allegories. It is a moral story that is told through the corruption of a religious person. Goodman Brown is a Puritan minister who lets his pride and belief in himself interfere with his relations with the community after he meets with the devil, which causes him to live the life of not knowing who to trust or believe in his own community. In the beginning when Faith, Brown 's wife, asks him not to go. Brown says to her "My love and my Faith ... this one night I must tarry away from thee". (DiYanni 273) When he says his "love" and his "Faith", he is talking to his wife, but he is also talking to his "faith" to God. He is headed into the woods to meet with the Devil, and by doing so he leaves his faith in God with his wife. His pride made him feel that he can sin and meet with the Devil because of this promise that he made to himself. This promise is not without irony because when Goodman Brown came back he no longer looks at his wife with the same faith he had before.…
