African Americans have had a rough history since the 1600s. This is because white people went to Africa and captured Africans and brought them to North America. While they were in North America, they were treated horribly because of their skin color. For example, they raped the women, whipped them, killed them and kept them away from their family. These events took place in the south, but in 1861 the north and the president Abraham Lincoln didn’t agree with slavery. This started the civil war that lasted for 4 years (1861 - 1865). In the book Jubilee, once every July 4th the whites in the South would have a gathering and would hang and kill an African American in front of everyone. All the Africans were forced to attend. According to chapter 11 of Jubilee “Every able-bodied slave in the county was, by order of his master, forced to attend the hanging”. This detail explains that the white Americans hanged the enslaved African Americans and forced every African American to watch it. Also, according to chapter 11 of Jubilee “Black children screamed and cried; women fainted, but on the faces of some of the men and boys there was an unnatural look, neither human nor sane, a look of pleasurable excitement, a naked look of thrills born from cruel terror.” This detail explains that the enslaved African- Americans were impacted watching another enslaved African die in front of them.
