The American Civil War took place on April 12,1861 through May 9,1865 an enormous battle between the North and the South that lasted from 1861 to 1865. Men in search for freedom from tyrannical rule, founded this nation on the belief that all men are created equal. Our Declaration of Independence, written in 1776, is based on this very statement. At this time in history Abraham Lincoln played a big role as he guided and preserved the United States though the Civil War, he also marked the American history by abolishing slavery, as well as trying establish equality for all mankind. Lincoln was able to obtain the opportunity of being elected to the Illinois State Legislature as a member of the Whig Party. He spent his personal time teaching himself about the law through reading William Blackstone’s Commentaries on the law of England. Abraham Lincoln demonstrated his capacity for learning throughout his years in the State Legislature. Eventually in 1837 he passed the bar exam then proceeded being a lawyer in Stuart law firm. With his well thought out speeches addressing state rights to western expansion with great emphasis on slavery, Lincoln used his gift of public speaking to express his political views. After being noticed by many political people Lincoln got elected as a presidential candidate for the Republican Party in the 1860 electoral ballot. Running alongside two other candidates named Stephen A. Douglas and John C. Breckinridge. Even with the competition Abraham strong communication skills enabled him to win the majority of the debates in every Northern State, California including Oregon. The results showed more electoral votes and a of lack of popular vote. Abraham lost the election to Douglas and instead gained popularity bringing him a step closer to becoming the 16th president.
Later on in the presidential election of 1860 Lincoln defeated Douglas but lead into big conflict with the Southern States who still wanted slavery to continue. The Southerners were greatly affected that they responded with resistance by choosing to secede the union.
