What Is Churchill's May 13, 1940?
It’s May 13, 1940. Hitler’s regime over Nazi Germany is spreading throughout western Europe. Churchill, the newly elected British Prime Minister, had the overwhelming task of rallying Britain and its allies together, inspiring a terrified public who feared for their lives and somehow defeat the Axis superpowers in war. He gave a speech to the Parliamentary House of Commons about his new government and ended up motivating the public to keep on fighting. Churchill responded most appropriately to conflict within his given situation because he made an elaborate plan to protect the country and inspired the public to take a stand in this war. He knew that he needed as much help as he could get in this war. Towards the end of the excerpt in his speech, he says “I feel entitled at this juncture, at this time, to claim the aid of all and to say, ‘Come then, let us go forward together with our united strength.’ ”(Churchill 13) Churchill is calling on the public to take a stand and unite against this evil with him. This quote is showing Churchill, Britain’s elected leader, generally talking to the common folk to join him in the fight, showing his trust in his people. Churchill did all this, along with forming an entirely new government, in the span of a weekend. So naturally, some people might argue that with the speed Churchill took in forming a new administration, he might make some mistakes that the Nazis can take advantage of. However, Churchill made sure to make wise and observant decisions, and in the end, the plan worked, as they later won the war. Churchill achieved this level of inspiration in one essay, which is now known as his “Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat”
