Fromm implied that disobedience is not a heinous crime. It can ignite of a great revolution by empowering rebellious acts
in order to yield an outcome. A real life example would be the Civil War. The Civil War (1861-1865) occurred because the Union states did not want to conform to the Confederacy and their traditional idea of slavery, trade, and states rights. The Union’s act of disobedience towards traditional ideas had backfired positively after winning the war. According to Civilwar.org, the Constitution was amended and created the 13th amendment which abolished slavery, 14th amendment guaranteed “equal protection under the law” to citizens, and 15th amendment which is the right of black men to vote. The majority of the African American gained their freedom and humanity because of the Civil War.
Fromm suggest that people in society should not be afraid to challenge traditional views and to not be easily swayed by an opinion of a higher power. Through fact-checking method, a powerful minority can be controlled before it can even begin. Besides, without disobedience humanity would be enslaved by those who can successfully oppress the rest.
