1. The process employed at VW is referred to as “mass customization.” Describe what this means and the pros and cons of such a manufacturing model from the perspective of the customer. Pros Cons • Gives the customer more options for their cars-and the products get exactly what they want • More expensive - anything that is customized to the extent that VW offers, is going to be more $ • Competitive Advantage over the market • First to offer the customization • Takes longer for customers to receive the product - waiting on the car to be manufactured to customers requests and then shipping • other companies mass produce cars ship them and then customize—takes less time • Customer can price the car based on accessories they want • Customer cannot test drive the car before paying for it they just have to see the computerized look • Customer feels more ownership because they designed their own car…
Charles Lyell was a geologist and paleontologist who wrote Principles of Geography which greatly influenced Darwin. Lyell’s theories emphasized natural law. To Lyell it made sense that geological processes were much the same today as they were thousands of years prior. Forces such as, volcanic eruptions, erosion by rivers, wind and rain, and sedimentation in rivers and lakes. The term uniformitarianism, the assumption that forces from the past are similar to the ones we see today.…
I believe that the north should have won the war for many reasons; they had a lot of advantages over the south. The north had better equipment and supplies. They had better industrialization to make the supplies needed for the battles. Also there were many railroads to transport the troops and supplies that everybody needed. The north had a greater population than the south so that made them have an overall advantage while fighting.…
Darwin started by studying with proclaimed geologists learning how to map lands and animals and develop theories. Darwin’s observations in the lands of wales and throughout various places in South America lead to his theories of coral reefs and formation of volcanic islands securing his position in the scientific community. After securing his position in the scientific community Darwin began to spread his theories of evolution.…
Explain determinism, compatibilism, and libertarianism, and discuss in detail which you think is the most convincing position in the free will debate.…
The well known ecologist Charles Darwin exhibited the hypothesis of natural selection. He went on numerous trips to the wildlife, taking after his interest of the nature and the change that happens in the nature. After examining different kinds of living organisms, he clarified Natural Selection as "preservation of favorable variations and the rejecting of injurious variations."(900). Darwin utilized relations and demonstrations to show that distinctive changes happened in the same specie, which assisted them with adapting to their environment.…
Darwin first introduced the idea of evolution in his publication of The Origin of Species, on November 24th, 1859 (Campbell, 2005, p. 438). This opposed many traditional views as it was generally accepted that the beginning inhabitants of the world had no mutations in their genetic composition. His publication had two major points. The first being the modern organisms presently inhibiting the earth, differ from their ancestral species by a process called evolution. The other point he made was that of natural selection, as it is the mechanism for evolution. The organisms inherit traits from ancestors who were able to survive specific environmental conditions, passing these traits on to their offspring.…
I believe that free will is true in saying, the idea that humans can freely choose their actions rather than all our lives being predetermined like the way determinist believe. Determinist think free will is just simply an illusion, and that our thoughts come from our background, and we are unaware as to which we strive no conscious control. As Sam Harris philosopher, claims that our thoughts and desires impose instinctive circumstances that define the character of your consciousness in that moment.…
In 1859, Charles Darwin, a scientist from England, formulated the theory of evolution. His theory was composed of two ideas: variation and natural selection. Variation was explained to be certain biological characteristics that a creature possessed in order to survive. Certain creatures who had the positive, favorable traits equipped them better for survival as opposed to the individuals lacking them. Natural selection was the process in which a species that adapted better to the environment because of preferable physical or mental characteristics continued to evolve and what caused the weakest of the species who were lacking in these to perish.…
Darwin’s theory of natural selection is not supported by the geological or fossil record, since there have been little to no remains of intermediate species found in fossils. Darwin explains this by using the imperfection of the geological record, as changes in land over time means that species will often not be preserved in a way that can be studied by scientists. He also references Charles Lyell’s Principles of Geology, which states that the earth’s surface is constantly changing, as evidenced by the degradation and deposition of landmasses. These changes happen slowly, over hundreds of millions of years, implying that life has been present of a long time, and the number of fossils found is a miniscule amount compared to all the living things…
Explanations of how these findings impacted the developing theory of evolution and relate to the modern theory of evolution: He came up with the theory of punctuated equilibrium which explained that evolution didn't occur at a constant rate but it brought him into conflict with other evolutionary biologists such as Richard Dawkins. Punctuated equilibrium is now widely accepted as being a valid explanation for apparent gaps that had appeared in the fossil record. It still involved a process of natural selection so it didn't contradict Darwin's original theory.…
Spatial forms can shape injustice. Mitchell argues, at the end of Axiom 6, that not only American culture, as well as the nature of American justice utilizes space in the landscape to separate the poor and the rich (Mitchell 2011, 45). In that regard, the usage of the landscape defines how the space is going to be lived on. For instance, a neighborhood might be ethnically diverse. However, a division is created when the working class are secluded to a section of the neighborhood or the higher class do not dare to step foot on the other side of the neighborhood. Hence, this becomes part of the injustice of our culture because landscapes become beneficial to those that are deemed “high” class.…
General Description We live in 2017 and yet somehow racism still exists in America. Racism does not only exist in some of the most obvious ways, such as the killings of unarmed Black men, but also in ways not many people discuss. Environmental inequities in America give rise to what is considered “environmental racism.” In particular, the term environmental racism associates racism with environmental situations.…
Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton introduced the balanced scorecard, which supplemented traditional financial measures with criteria that measured performance from the perspectives of customers, internal business processes, and learning and growth. The scorecard enabled companies to track financial results while monitoring progress in building the capabilities they would need for growth.…
