Hip hop is a style of dance that combines movements such as popping, locking, breaking, krumping, and jazz-funk. Hip hop is used to express individuality and has often been credited with helping to reduce inner-city gang violence by replacing violence with dance battles.
What is Contemporary Dance?
Contemporary dance is a style that lets you express yourself, has a lot of versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict and structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dance focuses on floorwork, using gravity to pull dancers down to the floor. Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music. Pioneers of contemporary dance include Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham.

Our hip hop dance is based on Toronto (AKA the 6ix), and we are all dancing to Canadian artists such as Drake and Justin Bieber.
We use ‘lazy’ movements to dance through the stage during the slower songs (Drake), and fast, sharp movements when big beat drops occur (Justin Bieber). Our contemporary dance is opposite to the style and movements of our hip hop dance. The contemporary dance has a lot of accents in the movement, and tons of music perfect for arm extensions and lifts. During our performance we have to act like we’re in the middle of a big snowstorm and we’re hoping to
survive.
What was your overall experience working with Bria and Amy on choreography for the final showcase? Was it positive? Negative? Different than working with any other guest artists? How? Why? My overall experience working with Bria and Amy was wonderful. There are amazing choreographers and I would love for them to come back and choreograph again. They have amazing ideas, song choice, and choreography. I think that when I work with different guest artists it takes me a little bit of time to warm up to them and ask questions. Because Amy and Bria went to school here as well, it took me less time because they knew what I was going through.
What do you think about having former students come in and teach/choreograph? I loved that Amy and Bria came in to teach and choreograph because I think that it’s cool that former graduates come back to where they learned different styles, and taught us (the students), new styles. It is beneficial because we learn different styles together, and we learn more life skills (such as teamwork and communication). I’m really excited for the next four years in highschool because I get to meet new choreographers and learn more about dance.
Other than actual dancing, what other skills have you received from being apart of the dance program so far and how has it helped you in school? At work? In life? Being in this program has helped me in so much. This program has taught me valuable life lessons such as teamwork, leadership abilities, problem solving, and self awareness. Whenever we were put in groups to choreograph, we all had to work together and make one dance. This helps in life because if you were ever stuck in a situation where you need to create something with a group, this skill will help. This will help with listening, building ideas, and much more.
As a result of being in this program, I’ve become a smarter, more athletic, confident, and caring person. Without this program in my life, I wouldn’t have achieved all my success.
