What Is It Like To Be A Bat
What is consciousness? Consciousness is “the state of being awake and aware of one's surroundings.” According to Thomas Nagel in his writing (What Is It Like to Be a Bat?). Now personally do I think that animals have human qualities, Yes I think and they are more than capable of solving problems, and having emotions whether its positive or negative, which I believe they project. Though there has been controversy over just which animals pass the mirror test, so they ran studies to gain a better grasp their findings concluded that chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans are more than capable of solving the task they were presented with, however there is strong evidence that a wide range of other primates who continuously fail. This is just a

single example of animals being able to think, not just have a brain but also be able to apply some type of critical thinking. As we progress in science we continue to study the mental capacity of these animals, as we dig deeper we are starting to discover their intellect is greater than anticipated.
Some of these studies focus on specific kinds of experience, such as pain, while others focus on cognitive abilities such as self-awareness that seem to be strongly correlated with human consciousness. “At present we are completely unequipped to think about the subjective

However, we are making great strides towards the ability to better understand the animals that cohabitate on this planet, as some animals could truly understand commands and apply critical thinking. According to Thomas Nagel however we will never truly be able to understand these creature as we cannot “see through their eyes”. Personally I can understand where Thomas Nagel is coming from and I do agree to a certain extent, though I believe science will prevail as we make indescribable technological

Can animals really think? Can they make decisions based on information? For years, scientists have debated these questions. Now many of them believe that some animals have the brain power to understand new situations, make decisions, and plan ahead. many animals adapt their behavior to the challenges they face either under natural conditions or in laboratory experiments. For example, on other parts of Africa chimpanzees select suitable branches from which they break ofg twigs to produce a slender probe, which they carry some distance to poke it into a termite nest and eat the termites clinging to it as it is withdrawn. Apes have also learned to use artificial communication systems to ask for objects and activities they want and to answer simple…

Science constantly evolves to study and gain understanding, which then can lead to data interpretation methods like Psychological .The Theorist Crick,-: His belief and scientific approach called “Reductionism” (Mapping Psychology, Pg 230) Suggests that “Potentially all psychological events and experiences can fully and only explained in terms of the activity within the components of the brain”. Other Scientists do however argue that there should be a much broader view taken, and other views et should be considered.(Bolton and Hill, 1996, Stevens, 1996: Toates, 2001) These other theorists, and studies are suggested (Mapping Psychology, Pg 230) as having equally possible explanations of how our brains components affect our actions and how we are.…

In the article, “A Change of Heart About Animals” by Jeremy Rifkin, he claims that humans are a lot more similar to animals than initially thought. First, Rifkin points out that animals feel the same emotions as humans do. The author also indicates that animals are able to perform similar tasks that require thinking and can also understanding languages. In addition, he states that animals are capable of self-awareness. Moreover, he emphasizes that animals share similar brain anatomy and chemistry as humans. Finally, Rifkin concludes that empathy, first starting off just for humans, is broadening out towards…

Humans are animals, but they are very different than any other animals. Many things can prove us that humans are one of a kind, like their intelligence for example. Even though humans and animals have many activities in common (sleeping, eating, mating, and defending), human beings have a fifth faculty: the intelligence to inquire into the truth of our existence (Butler and Guru). The following text will explain why human beings should be considered unique and why they should be in a different category from all the other non-human animals.…

When it comes to animal research I feel there are to major dilemmas that arise that play a major role in how we determine the research methods as ethical or not: (1) do certain non-human species have changed consciousness and (2) to what extent do the animals suffer or experience death and how that influences their overall “well-being.” I pose these to issues because as rational, logical creatures we are capable of answering these two questions for ourselves and discuss our thoughts and feelings with one another, but we are unable to converse with or tap into the psyche of other species in a similar manner. Essential, we cannot determine with certainty if non-human species truly have a consciousness or evaluate their overall state (aside from…

Matt Cartmill strongly supports the idea that animals have consciousness. Sleep is something that we know that makes us consciousness as humans. Most animals don't sleep, but some do. When a human is sleep they are unconscious, but when they wake up they return back to their consciousness. The same should apply to animals. When animals sleep their are also unconscious, but when they wake up they return back to their conscious state of mind. For example: when a owner is being attacked by a stranger or killer, not only would a human help, but a non-human, animal, would also help to protect you. Being said, animals have mental lives something like ours. The waking state in animals is something like ours, which includes mental events and awareness of the world. They were trying to say that computer were more in tune with people than animals were. This is not true because there isn't any computer that can ever produce consciousness. Nothing science has ever produced comes near to and the…

Report skepticism is exactly as it sounds; can we trust the data we are receiving for the experiment? We can gather all the data in the world and analyze it for years but if you cannot trust the data itself none of the information we have gathered matters. Two distinct subsects of report skepticism exist and they are known as under-determination and circularity. Under-determination is when the data you have collected does not have any significant evidence between two possibilities. With external world skepticism, under-determination causes a major problem because no matter how much evidence or information we gather in determining whether or not the world is real or if we are just heads in vats, none of the evidence will decisively point in…
