Mrs. Mallard genuinely feels a weight lifted off her shoulders when she is notified that her husband has passed. Inside her marriage feels there is a there is a “powerful will bending hers.” Therefore the news she is liberated from that makes her realize and she is free. Once she has wrapped her mind around this her perspective on the rest of her life changes to a joyous tone. This reaction is reasonable and genuine. Think of it like this: when a wild animal is liberated from it’s cage, at first it is timid but then it explores its outlook to his life out in the wild. Mallard live in present day. Women have higher standards. There could have been ways to fixed her marital problems. She could have gone to marriage counseling or simply gotten a divorced.
