Also, these missionaries helped many of the people who were sent out to die, like the twins that were rescued from the evil forest due to being considered a bad omen sent by the “Gods”. Catholics can say that missionaries coming to Umuofia was one of the best things that could’ve happened to these Africans since many of them would do savagery things such as when they tortured a dead baby body in order for this evil spirit to not return into another body. The missionaries were considered to have brought a lunatic religion, according to Okonkwo but this religion plays a huge role in the story since it lured Nwoye, Okonkwo’s eldest son, to convert. Nwoye has converted because he was inspired by their poetry, but he also knew that his father wasn’t proud of him due to not being as hardworking and a man like him, which angered Okonkwo because his son was just like his father, lazy and useless. Therefore explaining how unfair the Ibo religion was. The missionaries helped them into believing they are worth something, which is why many converted. Although the Ibo’s believe in many gods you can say that the chukwu shows some Christian features by many describing him as the supreme head and creator of all things, which can relate to the god of a Catholic. The “white man” does not understand the cultural background of the Ibo’s strange ways and cults, he can hardly make a fair judgement on them. Although, an Atheist would suggest that their belief in these gods is nonsense, at least the Ibo people were not as violent and savage as many of the missionaries believed. For example, this is shown when a villager from the Mbaino village kills a woman from the Ibo village, the Ibo village elders and those with titles, instead of starting a war against the neighbouring Mbaino, reach a peaceful agreement on the compensation for the women killed. Proving that the Ibo culture was already great on their own and therefore no need for the missionaries to come. Just like an atheist needs no-one to tell them that god does exist, the Ibo’s, need no-one to tell them that without God, not even the strongest spirit can do anything. That is why an atheist can view this to be bad, since the Christians are trying to prove to them that all these other spirits don't exist and there is only one mighty spirit, god
