What Is Phytoplankton Increase Carbon Emissions?

With oceans warming up, toxic algae blooms are popping up all around the globe. Toxic algae blooms are very harmful and happen when phytoplankton accumulate and create toxins like domoic acid, which is a neurotoxin that can be deadly (Geiling). What give the phytoplankton the conditions to grow are the increasing temperatures of the oceans. Emissions are coming from places like cement production (which is a leading cause) deforestation, and fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil, which increase carbon emissions, which in turn, increase ocean temperatures. Without a human element on earth, the normal rate of carbon emissions would be drastically lower than what is it today and ocean temperatures wouldn’t be increasing at its current rate.
Commercial and recreational fisheries were forced to shut down last summer due to the toxic algae bloom. Many small communities along the coast were forced to shut down, affecting a lot of tourism and fisheries profits, which normally come with tourism during the summer months. This also affected the huge global fish markets, since Oregon ships catches all around the world for international markets including Dungeness crab fisheries. Consumerism powers the United State’s economy and without a global and local fish market on the west coast, people will be displaced and communities will be forced to move. The increasing of ocean temperatures could change the culture of the small coastal communities, which have fished for centuries. The unsustainable culture of not using resources correctly will affect small communities first, and then it will move onto a global scale. The west coast isn’t he first place to be affected by the impact of rising ocean temperatures and it won’t be the last.
