Why Did Lincoln Won The Election Of 1860
In the late 1800’s there was tension between the North and South. It soon got worse when Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860. Soon after he won the election the southern states seceded from the Union, and then started the Civil War. The reason the Union won the Civil War was because of the technological advances such as weapons, railroads, and creation of the telegraph.

Weapons were helped by advances in technology because it gave shooting more distance and velocity, “minie ball” bullets, and advancements in rifles. The advances of shooting distance came from moving from a Musket to a Springfield rifle. They were both mainly used by the Union. A musket could only shoot 250 yards, and was invented by an Italian inventor named Moschetta. Then in 1861 the Springfield rifle was invented, this rifle could shoot up to 500 yards. Another important rifle was the Lorenz rifle. It was invented in 1862 by Austrian lieutenant Joseph Lorenz. The Union mainly used it. Lorenz rifle could shoot between 650 to 900 yards. The telegraph helped in many different ways, one of the biggest being that the messages were sent very fast. If Abraham Lincoln decided to change a battle plan or add something it then it got to a general quickly and easily. It also helped generals tell Abraham Lincoln if they were low on weapons, bullets, and supplies. They could also send messages if they were losing and needed more troops. There was a room that Abraham Lincoln used during the civil war. The room was used to make up battle strategies, as well as send telegraphs, and urgent messages to generals for battles. The telegraph was another way to send a message fast and get a reply fast. It was useful for letting the generals and Abraham Lincoln come up with the perfect battle plan to go on winning the Civil

Generation Z would have no qualms with crowning the iPhone the most influential invention in the history of communications. Seasoned historians, however, might argue that a bundle of cables in combination with an electrical current, called the telegraph, should take the prize for the most influential invention. The mid-19th Century implementation of the telegraph, single-handedly, brought about enormous change to the once asymmetric relationship between the tempo of domestic politics and the speed of transatlantic communication. For the first time, communication was independent of transportation and could keep up with the speed of diplomacy. It’s widespread use and growing industrial complex proved to be a crucial component of political development in the shifting nature of…

No one have ever worked a fully operated telegraph that could travel over long distance. Later in 1838, Samuel Morse would later partner up with Alfred Vail, who would later improve by adding the dot and dashes, and will known as “Morse Code,” that would change history. But it didn’t launch right away, for years the pair was struggling to find investors, until 1842, when they gained the attention from Maine’s Congressmen, Francis Ormond Jonathan Smith. The same year he would string wires between two Committee Offices in the capital and would send messages back and forth.…

Many traditional weapons were used in the Civil War, from knives to muskets, and bayonets to cannons. There was new technology that was introduced into warfare, through the Civil War, like rifled gun barrels, the Minie ball, and repeating rifles. A rifled gun barrel is the barrel of a rifle which has ridges grooved into it, so when the bullet is fired, it has more stability, which leads to more damage. A Minie Ball is a bullet for a rifle that has grooves around the entire surface that serves the same purpose as a rifled gun barrel, to keep the bullet steady. The Minie Ball is named after the co-inventor Claude-Étienne Minié. The repeating rifle, is probably the most advanced weapon in the Civil War. The repeating…

The gunpowder revolution saw many advancements beginning in the mid-fifteenth century. With the French invasion of Italy in 1494, France demonstrated that the exploitation and advancement of a technology could give one side an extreme advantage over the side which did not advance as quickly. France developed lighter and more mobile cannons, made from bronze, with handles on the sides that allowed them to be mounted to horse-drawn carts. These cannons could be easily traversed up or down, right or left, allowing for better aiming techniques. The French army also developed better propellant and ammunition by concentrating gunpowder, first introduced to Europe in the thirteenth century, through a process known as “corning.”…

The Gatling Gun was an extremely large weapon, which was usually mounted on a wagon or mounted on a fort. It had a large rotating barrel, and a huge ammunition capacity, which was helpful because it could fire rounds extremely fast, as fast as a person could turn the handle. It would fire bullets inaccurately, due to the fact that so many bullets came out so fast, and it would be hard to aim at every target that you need to. But, since it fired so fast, accuracy wasn’t really an issue. These were not mass produced, but they were pretty much the first rapid-firing weapon, which is why it was important. When it was just an experiment, it used a paper magazine, but that proved unreliable, so a brass magazine was later used, which proved much more durable, and much more reliable. But, Gatling Guns were not the only mounted weapons. There was also one that had been used for much longer, and in much larger numbers. The…

The American Civil War was a war over the secession of the Confederacy. The Confederate States of America were formed after 11 slave states declared their secession due to the election of an Anti-Slavery republican as president. The remaining 25 states formed the Union. Weapons such as the Gatling Gun, repeating rifle, which gave soldier the ability to fire multiple rounds without reloading, railroads and telegraphs, which played large factors in means of transportation of information as well as supplies, and the “minie ball”, a new type of ammunition, which caused immense and mortal wounds on the battlefield, were being developed, all aided the Union in defeating the Confederacy in the Civil War. The Gatling Gun was the first machine gun truly used in battle. The repeating rifle, which gave soldier the ability to fire more than one shot before reloading, was a huge advancement in battlefield tactics. Submarines were not used very extensively by the Union, but much so by the Confederacy. Balloons were widely used by the Union in order to do reconnaissance. Railroads were probably the biggest advancement, used to transport soldiers, weapons and other supplies throughout the war. The telegraph was a very easy way to relay information from base to base, regiment to regiment. The minie balls made rifles more accurate and caused more damage in the war zone.…
