Weapons of The Civil War People say that war never changes. Well, it actually does. Sure, there will always be people dying, and people who give up everything that they have just so they can fight for their country. But, the tactics, technology, and weaponry will always change. Weapons before the civil war were very primitive. They were usually single shot, and had many flaws, such as sudden explosion, and other problems. But once the civil war rolled around, weaponry became extremely advanced. Possibly the most important weapon in the civil war is the rifle. It was widely used due to their power and reliability. The Gatling Gun was an extremely large weapon, which was usually mounted on a wagon or mounted on a fort. It had a large rotating barrel, and a huge ammunition capacity, which was helpful because it could fire rounds extremely fast, as fast as a person could turn the handle. It would fire bullets inaccurately, due to the fact that so many bullets came out so fast, and it would be hard to aim at every target that you need to. But, since it fired so fast, accuracy wasn’t really an issue. These were not mass produced, but they were pretty much the first rapid-firing weapon, which is why it was important. When it was just an experiment, it used a paper magazine, but that proved unreliable, so a brass magazine was later used, which proved much more durable, and much more reliable. In fact, it has been around since before the Revolutionary War. The Cannon is used to take out large, closely-huddled groups of soldiers, from a long distance. Cannons used Cannon balls, which are large, round, heavy balls that explode on impact with the ground, and have proven to be catastrophic. Cannons were also used on ships, due to the fact that the munitions used were extremely large, and good for penetrating a ship. Cannons used on the battlefield are usually wheeled in, and fired at charging soldiers, which proves to have an extremely large effect on the soldiers. There are not many makers of the cannon, and they are usually all manufactured the same way.
