The Role Of Weapons In The Civil War
The Civil war was fought with weapons. But not many people actually think about the weapons. They think about the people. They don’t think about the fact that the weapons were really the determining factor. The advancements of weaponry greatly affected the outcome of the Civil War. …show more content…
Cannons are just oversized guns operated by a team of men. There were several kinds of cannons used in the Civil War (“Field Artillery”). One kind is the Howitzer. There are three classes of Howitzers (“Field Artillery”). There is the twelve pounder, the mountain, and the twenty-four pounder. Contrary to what it sounds like, twelve pounder and twenty-four pounder is not how much they weigh, but how much the ammo weighs. The twelve pounder is very powerful, but its short range its weakness. The mountain Howitzer is much smaller and lighter, and able to be disassembled for transportation (“Field Artillery”). It was commonly used in the mountains, as its name suggests. The twenty-four pounder Howitzer is much heavier than the other Howitzers, making it harder to move them. They are very powerful and are mainly used for defense (“Field Artillery”). Another kind of cannon is the Whitworth, a very large and powerful iron cannon with a very long range. There are a few downsides, though. The cannon is very expensive and jams easily, which is probably why it was very rarely used in the Civil War (“Field Artillery”). Another uncommonly used cannon is the James cannon. This cannons flaw is that the bronze barrel wears down easily when shot. Most cannons are made of a mixture of bronze and iron, but the fact that this one is made of only bronze makes it weak (“Field Artillery”). Other cannons used in the Civil War each have a …show more content…
The main types of edged weapons used in the Civil War are: bayonets, swords, and knives.
Bayonets are sharp attachments put on the end of guns (“Field Artillery”). They were not used very often, more for intimidation. The most famous use of the bayonet was in the second day of the battle of Gettysburg (“Field Artillery”). The Union was low on ammo, so Colonel Joshua Chamberlain told them to charge down the hill with their bayonets, and they scared the Confederates away. Joshua got a medal of honor for this (“Field Artillery”). Another edged weapon in the Civil War is the Bowie knife. The Bowie knife has a blade that is 8-12 inches long and 1.5-2 inches wide. This knife was made by for Jim Bowie by James Black. Bowie used the knife in a battle known as the Sandbar Fight (“Field Artillery”). Swords were rarely used in the war, and soon were replaced with handguns. The main purpose of swords was for ceremonies and to show

Handguns played a major role in the Civil War as far as weaponry was concerned. For instance, the most popular sidearm in the Union army was the Colt Army model 1860, which was a .36 caliber. The Army model 1860 was remodeled after the 1848 Dragoon, which was used in the Mexican War. The Colt model 1860 was a .44 caliber six shot weapon weighing two pounds eleven ounces. During the Civil War, more than 146,800 Colt revolvers were purchased. This made up more than 40 percent of all the handguns bought by the government at that time. In 1851, the .36 caliber revolver was produced by Colt. Colt then sold approximately 215,000 navy models, as they were called. The Star Revolver was a .44 caliber, six shot, double action…

In the late 1800’s there was tension between the North and South. It soon got worse when Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860. Soon after he won the election the southern states seceded from the Union, and then started the Civil War. The reason the Union won the Civil War was because of the technological advances such as weapons, railroads, and creation of the telegraph. Weapons were helped by advances in technology because it gave shooting more distance and velocity, “minie ball” bullets, and advancements in rifles.…

Although the cannon was very popularly used in a lot of civil war battles, it was barely used in the Battle of Chickamauga at all. This was because, their were a lot of trees and other barriers in the way, making it hard for people to aim the cannons and shoot them without hitting a target that was not meant to be hit. Cannons were only used during this battle when absolutely necessary, and when their were no obstacles in the path to get in the way of the cannon fire.…

Prior to mass production soldiers used a dated smoothbore muzzle-loading rifle that was extremely time consuming to reload, and extremely inaccurate to shoot, giving a killing range of under 100 yards. A new manufacturing practice to increase the killing range was to “rifle” the gun barrel. This practice was not a new technology, it just took so long to preform by hand no army could afford to purchase the rifled gun barrels. Of course with new equipment available this practice became widely used. The gun barrel would have a machine cut groves into the inside of the barrel, this paired with a new bullet that took the shape of a missile caused a huge increase of killing range, up to 500 yards.…

Another main gun that played a sizable amount in the war was the anti-tank rifle. The anti-tank rifle was used by the Americans and the Germans. These rifles were some of the first grenade launchers and were built and used to take out tanks that were approaching. Although the anti-tank rifles were useful they had their flaws. They were often heavy and inaccurate and weren’t meant for long range; when used for long range the accuracy decreased and would often miss.…

The Gatling Gun didn’t see much action during the Civil War except for a battle and gun ship wars. The Gatling Gun was designed in 1861 and patented November 4th, 1862 (The Gatling Gun). Jams often occurred in this model because the barrels and chamber didn’t always a line properly (Gatling Gun). The Union army didn’t adopt this version because of the many problems it had even though it proved successful in the field tests (Foner). Gatling made an improvement version in 1862 which solve most issues within the gun. This model is also the model that the U.S. Navy adopted (Gatling Gun). The Gatling Gun was considered the first successful machine gun (Gatling Gun). General Benjamin F. Butler bought twelve Gatling Guns for 1000 dollars apiece (Foner). These were used in the siege of Petersburg, Virginia in 1864 (The Gatling…

Each Army’s artillery ranks were made up of many different cannons. The Confederate Army had many rifled cannons imported from Great Britain to include a number of Whitworth and Blakely rifles. Napoleon 12-pounder Field Guns were developed in France in the 1850s and were named for Emperor Napoleon III. At Gettysburg, the Napoleon 12-Pounder Field Gun made up 39% (107/272) of the total Confederate field pieces (Schwartz, 2001). During the battle the 3-inch ordinance rifle was the Union’s most common field piece, making up 146 out of the 360 cannons fielded that day by the Union Army (Schwartz, 2001).…

This giant cannon is the largest caliber rifled weapon that was ever used in combat, it is the heaviest mobile artillery piece ever built in terms of weight, and fired the heaviest shells of any artillery piece. It is only surpassed by the British Mallet’s Mortar and the American Little David (both 36 inches; 914 mm) which neither ever used in combat. This operation stopped because it became to expensive to build new railroads for the…

The American Civil War provided many chances for improvements in technology, but some of the new technology that was developed was in military technology. Many of the new developments involved taking previous technology and developing it for the military. An example would be lights used in lighthouses. The lights were originally used to warn ships of the land and with technology developments they were used to spot soldiers from the fortresses. Although, the Union and Confederate Armies took previous technology and formed it to their needs, some new technologies were made.…

In the 1360s and 70s the French and the Germans began creating guns that were capable of throwing stone balls weighing 220 pounds. Called bombards, these were on of the first guns capable of inflicting a great deal of damage to fortress walls. What made cannons so effective was they were able fire heavier objects at a faster rate and a farther distance than most other siege weapons. This success was demonstrated in 1494 by Charles VIIl during his invasion of Italy. Gunpowder siege weapons easily destroyed medieval walls so the Italians designed a new type of fortification.…

Also, another weapon that was frequently used was machine guns. A disadvantage to them was that they needed 4-6 men to use them so this could be costly if you are facing an opponent and one of the men is just sat there holding something. Another disadvantage was that they had to be used on flat surfaces otherwise they would not work. However, it was an effective weapon as it was like the power of 100 guns put together. Large field guns were long range and could really deliver devastating blows to an enemy. But a very bad thing about the large field weapon was that it needed 12 men to work it which it double to normal machine gun. This would give the enemy easier targets. Although they did fire shells which would then explode on impact. A shell is the metal or cardboard casing that would contain an explosive charge.…

There is an old saying among artillery men that their weapon is not the gun. It is the ammunition/shell, and the gun is only the last stage in transportation from the factory to the target. The same applies to all fire arms as they are merely devices for discharging bullets, shells, bombs/projectiles of one sort or another which are the things destined to have the desired effect on the enemy target. Without ammunition the finest firearm is merely an expensive club or at best, a handle for a bayonet, while a piece of artillery with no ammunition is no more than an ornament.…
