As civilization grows savagery grows with it, it is harmful to society. The more rules society has, the more rules there are to break. In Lord of the Flies, once Ralph started establishing rules, people began to break them more and more until the rules had no effect. All it takes is one selfish person to break a rule, and will cause a domino effect on how others view themselves in society and as a person. One person being selfish will almost force others to be selfish as well causing more problems and eventually more than anyone can handle. “We are all ready to be savage in some cause. The difference between a good man and a bad one is the choice of the cause.” (William James). Everyone is born with savagery and it is always around. Savagery even comes out in the best of people that others wouldn’t …show more content…
expect. As long as everyone has savagery, society will never even be close to a prefect society. “Civilization is like a thin layer of ice upon a deep ocean of chaos and darkness.” (Werner Herzog). As long as there is civilization there will always be savagery that will want to destroy civilization. Savagery is harmful to society and these quotes prove it.
Savagery controls people and changes them in horrible ways.
In Lord of the Flies, the kids went from just setting up camp and surviving together, to splitting up completely and trying to kill each other. The kids are all probably nice kids, but once they become selfish, they become savage. “Problem solving is hunting. It is savage pleasure and we are born to it.” (Thomas Harris). This quote means that all people have savagery in them in some form, if it comes out of them the only way to temporarily stop it is by “hunting”. Although the more we “hunt” the more savage they become in the long run and others will have to be savage as well. “Kill him! Kill him!” (Golding 114). This represents how the young boys turned themselves in complete savages. Instead of helping each other survive, they turned against each other and are killing each other. William Golding showed how savagery controlled people into turning against
everyone.
Civilization controls savagery and prevents it from becoming too overwhelming. In the book Ralph attempted to establish rules to survive. For example, giving people jobs they had to do, not talking without the conch, voting for a leader, etc. These rules made things civilized for a while, but didn’t last very long. Ralph did not inforce the rules as much as he should of, therefor everyone ended up breaking them and turning themselves and others into savages. “Let’s have a vote.” (Golding 22). This quote shows that the kids established rules to be civilized. The first rule they had was to vote for a leader which is like a democracy. “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting.” (Golding 16). This quote shows that the conch is being used to establish more rules. The conch was used to call meetings and to show who get to talk during the meeting. These examples and quotes prove that civilization controls savagery.
These ways prove that savagery is worse than civilization. Savagery destroys civilization and humanity, it creates a horrible domino effect the harms everyone. The only way to contain savagery is to establish civilization.
