These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes (Gary 2014). When these pauses occur, it disrupts the person from sleeping, causing them to wake up. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This sleep apnea can be fatal, because it causes the muscles that normally hold the airway open to collapse or stop the airflow (Bernadette 2012). Obstructive sleep apnea can also cause myocardial ischemia, bradycardia, and vasoconstriction (Bernadette 2012). Central sleep apnea is a least common type of sleep apnea (Gary 2014). Central sleep apnea is where the brain doesn’t send the right signals to the muscles that control your breathing (Gary 2014). Sleep apnea is considered to be the most serve sleeping disorder for children (Raquel 2011). Some of the treatments may include surgical options while other treatments may just be a lifestyle change (Bernadette 2012) It children, the main cause of sleep apnea is enlarged tonsils. With the enlarged tonsils they could have a tonsillectomy (Raquel 2011). This surgery will not lead to any other complications, therefor is very safe for children (Raquel 2011). This would help the child to be able to breathe normally (Raquel 2011). Some of the lifestyle changes that could be made are to quit smoking and loose weight.
