Various leaders of this document, “Debating the Balfour Declaration: The British Government Supports a Jewish Homeland in Palestine”, envision the impact of creating a Jewish state on Jews living in other countries would be a great change to the world. For instance, Jules Cambon sent a letter to Nahum Sokolow stating that creating a Jewish state would be a deed of justice. Because the French Government entered a war, creating a Jewish state would give a home for the Jewish people and give Jews from all parts of the world to migrate together. Many Jews didn’t agree with the idea of combining Jews together such as the English Jews. Even though they didn’t agree, other Jews in larger numbers were understanding to
the idea.
The reason why the leaders accelerated to act on this matter and show support for Zionism is because they were trying to build a peaceful environment for the Jews. In the document, H. M. Government stated that “the Jewish people needed to build up its National life in Palestine under a protection to be established at the conclusion of Peace, following upon the successful issue of the war.”
The leaders concerns about establishing a Jewish settlement within Palestine were that Palestine was inadequate to form a home for either the Jewish or any other people. The document states “It did not necessarily involve the early establishment of an independent Jewish State, which was a matter for gradual development in accordance with the ordinary laws of political evolution.” Another concern would be the difficulty felt with regard to the future position of Jews in the Western countries. The assimilation was often felt to be incomplete, and any danger of a double allegiance or non-national outlook would be eliminated.
