The Boy in the Striped Pajamas took place during the 1930s to 1940s, during the Holocaust. It was about a German boy named Bruno, who moved from Berlin out to the countryside because his father, a Commander, got a promotion. Unbeknownst to Bruno his work was heading the concentration camps that could be seen from their own back yard. Bruno was only 8 years old and didn’t understand what was really going on within the war. Bruno one day went exploring and found one of the camps. Later, Bruno quickly found out what the war was about, after he befriended a boy that was sitting on the other side of the fence, Schmuel.

“The Jews who died were not casualties of the fighting that ravaged Europe during World War II. Rather, they were the victims of Germany's deliberate and systematic attempt to annihilate the entire Jewish population of Europe, a plan Hitler called the “Final Solution” (Introductory of Holocaust, Web). Holocaust killed approximately 6 million Jews.
In the book I read Kurt Gerstein, a SS (Storm Trooper), account of an event during Holocaust where Hitler had thousands of Jews herded on to a train and gassed. He recalled the horror of what was happening. In the movie you could see that there was German Soldiers that, too were horrified in what they were having to do to the Jews. Not all of the Soldiers agreed with what was happening. They were forced to do these things or be put to death.
I learned from the movie that if you were a German, caught leaving Germany, instead of joining the military to help round up Jews, you were hunted down and killed or any remaining family was hurt or in this movies case, the soldier was sent to the front lines of the
